Thanks a bunch for the info. This will be our first time crabbing. Can ya possibly give me a few directions to either coldspring or where yyou are headed. I am not sure where any other place but bear mountain dock is. I would be eternally in your debt. We want to go tomorrow.. Unfortunatly we missed it this morning. Also...is it better to fish an incomming or out going tide....or does it not reallly matter. I caught alot of perch the other day with worms and poles...at the rio resovoir . Thats a really fun place to fish!!! Anyway good luck with the crabbing if ya can send me directions to anywhere i would love it. I will undertsnad any directions..lol well maybe hubby will...

I wouldn't really say "theyre catching them in Cold Spring", quite yet. Haha. No keepers yet, just smallies. For us, anyway.
For the white perch, catfish, and eels, I'm just using regular night crawlers. 7' Shakespear Alpha Rod with a size 55 reel ($30 for the combo at dicks). I use 14lb line tied off to a barrel swivel with about a 2' leader. size #2 regular hook, with 4oz bank sinker on slider. Cast out, and let it sit.

I have been crabbing 3 times this summer, all at the rockland county park in haverstraw NY. i went june 3rd and didnt even get a little nibble. i tried it out again june 19th caught 6 keepers all pretty big and full of meat, and literally about 25 crabs of 3 inches or less. i then went again today and caught 17 keepers and again about 25 babies.. however it was so hit or miss.. i arrived with the tide on its way in and caught about 12 in the first 1.5 hrs.. however for the next 5 hrs i stayed, i only reeled in another 5, it got deadly slow at points, but not a bad early july outing this far up the river..

Angels if you can mapquest or use a navigation unit put in Cold Spring Train Station as Destination and you'll be right there....Otherwise the easiest way is come across the newburgh beacon bridge, exit route 9 south towards Peekskill and after like 8 - 10 miles turn left onto route 301 and head all the way into Cold Spring. I myself will probably head down to Croton this weekend!

To measure, it's point to point. And, LEGALLY, you can keep females, as long as no eggs are present. Most crabbers, including myself, throw back ALL females.
For directions to anywhere, just use google maps or mapquest.

Awsome! Sounds like a good day, other than the storm. We are still yet to catch a keeper this year. Hopefully later today!

Tell him that if more people did that, there'd never be any legal size crabs for us to get! haha. In my opinion, you definetly should say something, or call DEC. It's possible they just don't know the laws, and need to be informed.

Glad to see some people had more luck than us. We were at Croton Point Park Sunday along the West wall (east side of river) Only 1 keeper that we ended up not keeping...LOL About a dozen Juvies....and the kids caught what appeared to be two baby stripers (about 2-3 inches) All in all it was a beautiful day. Croton is not my normal spot but I am waiting for them to come further North. Please keep the updates coming!

croton point park? I think thats where we were. But not sure. Actually I think we were at croton landing. Is that the same place? We passed a park but it said residents only. So we went down to the landing. Beautiful spot but a very large rock wall...I couldnt get up there neither could my daughter, just my son and my hubby. Am I in the right spot? lol

Was in Cold Spring last night with dmuprh and hxc_vdubb, like every monday. Caught at least 15 smallies, but finaly got one keeper. 4 3/4". .Just tossed him back at the end of the night, sence it was the only one. Its a good sign, though! Also pulled in about 8 perch, 5 catfish, and 3 eels with the poles.

I went down to an old favorite place yesterday. Hadn't gone in the past couple of years because of the walk, and a snapping turtle the size of a sewer cap that used to terrorize my traps. If 4 inch crabs were legal I could have had the limit. Lots of smaller crabs to. I don't keep crabs less then 5 inches. I had 7 traps out, ended up with 8 keepers between 6:30 am and noon. Oh and that old snapper wasn't there but his younger brother was and did get into my traps a couple of times.
