Might have dodged a bullet yesterday….

I was out on the pier checking what needed to be done to the pots when a Van pulled in.  The driver and the passenger didn’t see me.  The passenger got out of the Van and went up the steps to the front door.  I was already walking up to the house.

The guy looked into the window of the house without ringing the doorbell.  That’s when I called out.  To get his attention.  He came straight to me. 

My hand was on my pocket pistol.  The guy said they were selling frozen steaks.  He kept coming toward me.  I told him to leave the property.  He reached out in a gesture to shake my hand.  The strong hand on the revolver.  I just motioned him to leave with the weak hand.

In hind sight I think, the Van was empty.  I looked in as they left.  Also, now I know my pocket holster was printing with my hand on the gun.

Maybe nothing, but …………….

That is strange Jack. I do not think I have ever herd of anybody selling frozen steaks from a van. I thought door to door sales men are supposed to knock and not look in the windows. I glad you are safe but I would keep an eye out for a little while. A lot of criminals like to stake out a place before committing a crime. They could have been trying to look around to see what they could take and what time would be the best opportunity. Since you saw them this might deter them from coming back as you could identify them. Just keep an eye out and be safe.

Glad you didn't have to dodge anything.  Awful fishy lookin in your window wheather he rang or not.  I live in the same neighborhood I grew up in and it seems every few years a pickup truck pulls up to either our house or my folks house with the pitch of;  "We got all these extra steaks we're trying to unload - bargin prices"  We've never bothered to look in the commercial lookin chests in the back of the pickups - convinced its some kind of scam.

Guy came to the house one time in a van. Similar story. Selling steaks out the back. Chesapeake steak company, or something similar. Told him to keep moving. Others around here might not have been as nice to him.

We've had the pick ups with the chest freezer in the back cruising the street trying to sell steaks as well. Never looked and never got into any conversation , if we were caught outside.

If I don't know you, I don't answer the door. The other day, two people came to the door carrying carrying clipboards. I wasn't expecting anyone and picked up the phone and dialed 9-1 and held the phone until they were gone. After they left, I found a Comcast card on the door. I'm too cheap to have cable, so I bet they were salespeople.

Poor Old Grouchy gets caught outside by the Jehovah's Witnesses - they sneak up on him when he's doing something with the car or boat. They leave me pretty much alone after I told one crew that I had just become a satanist! devil

i worked for one of those companies for about a week,what a waste of time.the products are not really bad,just WAY over priced.its the cold call selling that really sucks.and we ALWAYS had a small pickup with the freezer in the back and signs on the door,so i think you were right to be suspicious of the van.never seen a van being used by these companies,they were probably casing the house for later,sounds like you gave them quite a surprise. glad you were so alert. you can never be too careful. Wink

Glad your ok, I dont trust anyone door to door, then again I dont trust too many peaple at all anymore. And the last thing I want to do is buy food out of the back of a guys truck............Last guy who tried to sell me steaks on my street, didnt get the hint the first three times I told him to leave, when I raised my voice and said I was starting to get irrated by his persistance, my dog heard me, saw him in her front yard with her daddy, and allmost came through the screen door Wink He left rather quickly after that laugh I also made a quick phone call to local law enforcement about a possible salesman with no town buisness license, havent seen that truck since

We have people that work our area wtih differant sales pitches all the time. I always assume that they are there to case the house, maybe i'm cynical but i always open the inside door and i have a full view storm door so they can see everything, Including my solid black male german sheperd at 107lbs       who is going nuts by this time wanting a piece of whoever it is. My only words to these people is  I"M NOT INTERESED.

10-4.... Normally my 2 Chessies are with me anytime that I am outside.  For some reason I walked out to the pier and left them in the kitchen.  I'm sure the guy would not have even stopped let alone gotten out and walked up to the house had they been loose...  Cool

That reminded me of back in the day...  Running a tad wild.  Saturday morning I stumbled in 4ish dark time.  Sometime in the morning the door bell woke me up.  Opened the door and thru blood shot eyes me sees a Nun and a Priest.  I just said, "Boy do you have the wrong house."  As I fell back in the sack I could see them still stand at the front door with that deer in the headlight look..  Grin laugh

Seems like everyone has a story for someone trying to sell meat.  Must be more competition then grass cutting.

I heard you get free meat in prison.
