3rd trip out to Jamaica bay. Today was high tide I spent 6hours 10am-4pm there were lots of people fishing and a few boats on the water, so I guessed there's fish around but I didn't get anything  no blue crabs either lmao... I did manage to get a baby Green crab (black tips on both claws one big claw one small claw lol)... and there were still a lot of jellyfish, and plenty of those marine mud snails... |

You are probably about a month and half too early to even think about getting crabs up here. With all the cold and rainy weather we've had maybe even more.

I'm trying to figure out when they start coming in.... this is my second summer, last year I started out mid summer and caught a lot of them... I'm thinking if I can get them when they start coming in I'll get the bigger ones .... last year the most were around 5"-6"; a few above 6"... I need to find a way to make a trap I can throw off the bank, rather using the bridge. I saw one on youtube but I don't like it. I was thinking about making a trotline and throwing it out from the bank but I dont think it will be as efficient as a trap. With my dipnets, I can haul in a few crabs at once from the bridge... If only there was a way to make a dipnet that can be pulled in from the side and dragged to the river bank... lol |

I need to find a way to make a trap I can throw off the bank, rather using the bridge. I saw one on youtube but I don't like it. I was thinking about making a trotline and throwing it out from the bank but I dont think it will be as efficient as a trap. With my dipnets, I can haul in a few crabs at once from the bridge... The "Crabhawk" is really controversial on here, but what you described fits it almost perfectly. You could probably make your own if you wanted the cage part to be bigger. |

Where in Jamaica Bay do you crab? off the Rockaway bridge?
Have you tried off the road after the diner on the north side of Rockaway? Supposedly my grandpa got good results.. but this was 20 years ago.

Headless, Let me be your scouting partner since we live in the same city.. I tried off the Beach Avenue and no luck as of 2 days ago.. Im gonna try a different side of the Jamaican bay this week and will let you know how it went. Where did you try? tx |

I was wondering the same. Do the crabs hibernate in the ocean and make their way up the Hudson when the water temp rises or do they hibernate all over the river? thanks p.s.- no crabs in the Jamaican Bay except a ton of Spider crabs. |

yea there are spider crabs lmao. I read they go to deep water and "hibernate". I tried at north channel bridge... I will try there again in 2weeks unless someone goes before me and make a positive report.  |

went fishing again, caught 0, didn't try to catch crabs, but I did see a 2" blue crab shell... so that means there coming around ... I'll definitely try crabbing this weekend erm or maybe not long weekend LOL |

been away from this site for a while. its a little early for the blueclaws , although you might see a few in the shallow water thats about it for now. just comimg out of the mud. i have not seen one yet and look every day. give it another week or so , it usually starts by a few days either side of fathers day. and them its lights out crabbing.

Saturday may 28- 7am-6p, no blue crabs, only carapaces and a couple of 2-4" dead on the beach... no fish either, lots of dead blue fish carcasses and 1 striper carcass...BILLIONS OF SAND FLIES in the morning I GOT EATEN LMAO, my hands and a few on the side of my face... I didn't even realize they were there, and my brother and I had no bug spray, but we found that they were not on the beach, only where there was a lot of seed weed/moss...
TIP: ALWAYS BRING BUG SPRAY!(I learned the hard way)

Nothing happened, bunch of spiders. I was away for Memorial Day weekend, fishing in Keuka Lake in Western New York. Had lots of low-quality action, but that's another story. I am going to Jamaica Bay this Saturday, weather permitting. Hoping to start the season this time. If this weather continues, they should start coming out right about now. I bought a COSTCO size container of Old Bay over the winter. It's waiting to be used. |
