Oak Fire for steaming
«
on:

Hey guys, all the way through the 1980's my dad always used a wood fire for steaming crabs in his homemade "heavy duty" stainless pots. Does anyone still use a fire/hot coals as their fuel source anymore. To me, there was just something special about getting away from the house while standing around the fire pit drinking beer and BS'ing. At the end of the day, we always cranked the fire back up for a night of fun. Sometimes, faster isn't always better.

My wife keeps saying this to me over and over again, but I still don't believe her.

Ron what the [Sam Hill] is wrong with you..
Dave Jr I think that sounds pretty cool doing a pot of crabs over a hardwood fire..... obvioulsy it stuck with you over time, ... of days gone by and fond memories.... I might have to hand off the propane burner and try it sometime......

That does sound cool. We do a seafood boil that was and it always turns into a drunken seafood food fight.

I do it all the time while camping. Once the fire is hot, it keeps the steam up with no problem and adds a nice flavor to the crabs. I only carry the plumbers type propane bottles on a small stove for coffee and such.

Was gonna ask about this b/c in a beach camping resort for summer and trailer kitchen just too small to begin with-campfires are the obvious thing to do around here and this will be a first for me to cook them over a campfire ring and I can't wait!!

I steam on a wood fire when I am camping in Ocean City. Be prepared for the soot on the pot. DO NOT use your best steamer because you will never get it clean enough to use in your house again. The crabs do steam just fine though.
