Crabbers Asked to Install Turtle Excluders on Pots
Posted: May 14, 2011 11:50 AM EDT
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)- Remember the terrapin when you set out crab pots this year.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says it receives reports every year of diamondback terrapins that are trapped and drown in crab pots lacking an escape hatch known as a Turtle Excluder Device. And it is asking recreational crabbers to make sure their crab pots have the devices.

The device consists of a rectangular frame that keeps turtles from getting into the trap, but not crabs. State officials say a crab pot with a correctly installed TED will catch just as many crabs, and not drown terrapins.

Abandoned crab pots have been found with as many as 49 drowned terrapins, deaths that can seriously hurt terrapin populations.

The article neglected to state that the requirement for "excluders" only applies to recreational pots off of private piers by property owners.

Is that because, thats where these turtles are more inclined to be?

Yes.  They are not far from shore... I drowned one this week... Sad  Bought extruders but they are almost in possible to retro fit. Only got them on a couple of my peeler pots.  They don't sell the ones like you can get up north down here.....

It's another "feel good" regulation. All of my pots have the excluders, and I catch just as many turtles now as I did before I installed them. But the "turtle lady" who got this passed is happy.
If you really want to save the turtles, you have to check your pots a couple of times a day so you can get them out before they drown. The real killers are the weekend warriors who put their pots in on Sunday and don't check them again until the following weekend.

Yes.

Jack - the excluders are easy to make. I make mine out of the plastic coated aluminum clothes line wire (I think it's #9). Put it in the funnel and hold it in place with four 1/4" hog rings, one on each corner of the excluder.

Sure you can.     More often than not they sell them without the extruders, then try to sell the extruder seperately at an inflated price.

It's the old "Thanks for purchase.    By the way, did you know you need to put an extruder on that?"

I bought enough to do all the pots I had at the time but it was a pain in the "hands" to retro fit them to the inside of the funnels.  Are you saying you just put them in, say the middle, of the funnel?  All the ones I've see down here were put in when the funnels were built.  Trying to put them in like that was a chore...

Jack, I push the excluder all the way to the inside of the funnel (smallest end) and put a hog ring on each corner. It's not really that big of a problem, just a pain in the butt because they really don't accomplish much other then the "feel good" thing.

I was trying to install them on the inside.  I got to get 5 new pots this week. I'll put them in your way.  As far as how effective they are, all I know is I have never had a turtle in a pot with the excluder's installed.  Have had them in pots without "but" that doesn't mean they work.  It just means I haven't had that many turtles to deal with.  I do feel bad when I drown one. They are neat turtles and good to eat. Grin

Peelers need way less opening to enter the pots.........A 10" JUMBO needs lots of space... Wink  Funnel styles make a difference in how big  of a crab you'll catch, when you block them off with a SQUARE HOLE, I'll venture your catch will drop, unless your catching smaller crabs.

Oh, I agree.... I would never put them in my HC pots, unless forced to, out in the Sound.  Only get the turtle in the pots "under the bank".
