Old Bay - Less Sodium
«
on:
May 26, 2011, 04:06:50 PM »
In my wanderings, came across a can of Old Bay marked less sodium where salt is not the first ingredient,
salt is a cheap spice and I would prefer to add my own and the type of salt that I want
haven't tried it yet and I brought a 15 oz can but this link says they don't make a 15 oz size

Maybe you found some knock off chinese import used for mitten crabs. IMO crabs come from salt water, don't need much more.

I think retail is the small cans
they sell the bigger cans to restaurants only

That's good to know. I am on a low sodium diet, (1500mg or less per day) so I have to make my own most of the time without salt and add sea salt as needed. I could mix the low sodium old bay with my own that doesn't have salt added to get it lower.

To be honest I'm not sure if JO comes in a low sodium version or not... I've never really looked into it!

Here is a link to J.O. web site. They list J.O. #1 and #2, but also a #1 with 50% less salt.

I have the old bay 30% less sodium at the house(picked it up at BJ's) IMO it is far better then regular old bay since it is obvuiously not as salty. Havent tried ythe other stuff, just what they sell at Angels in Pasadena.

I am reading these post about the Old Bay Less Sodium and the JO Spice. First, JO#1 is the All Purpose Seafood Seasoning and it does contain salt, just a different salt then the J.O. #2 which is recommended for Crabs Only due to the salt content. I don't want anyone to get the wrong message if they have a diet restriction when it comes to sodium so I wanted to clarify that right away. J.O. #1 comes in a 50% less salt and has been recommended by doctors from St. Agnes for those who are watching their sodium intake. Remember it will be spicier due to the lower salt content. I hope this helps:) I haven't been on in a while so I just saw these post!
