White Stone (VA) report

Just got back from a week-long vacation at the river. I'm located on Antipoison Creek just north of the Rappahannock River in White Stone, Virginia.

Dropped 8 crabpots off my pier baited with bunker (menhaden). Checked the pots daily, rebaited, and culled the keepers into a holding tank. After one week (7 days), I had two dozen keepers in the holding tank with about 75% being whiteys. Caught a lot of small throwbacks.

Although we had enough for a small meal, this is the worse I've seen it at the river. A friend on Windmill Point Creek which is a little closer to the Chesapeake Bay said that he's not catching any off his dock.

Wow!  I thought you would be "busting em" down there.  Things as you have observed have been ok up here around mid-bay, but definitely still slow.  

Anyday now I think the action will really start to pick-up   and I'm hoping that will be this Thursday on my vacation day.

Normally big males like fresher less salty water than females and can be found in the creeks.  This year the whole bay is fresher than normal so the males have stayed out in deeper water.  Crabn on this side of the bay ES has been fair to good.  We been even getting a number of crabs in pots that are not been baited for days.  Before someone asks, the crabs go into the grass covered pots to hide.

What a difference a week makes.

Back at the river this weekend. Yesterday alone yielded amost a dozen keepers from my crabpots! Had a nice crab feast (two dozen) of jimmies, one being 6 1/2" which is large for my area. Again, mostly whities, but a few rusty ones to keep everyone happy.

Aint it the truth.  Crabs should be tops for the next ten days or so leading up to the full moon on the 12th.
