Intro involving Chinese Mitten Crabs
«

Hello, My Name is Darrick Sparks and I am Mid-Atlantic Chinese Mitten Crab coordinator. I am a biologist with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater. MD. My interest in joining the forums is most of the crabs found in the last few years have been by commercial crabbers. So if there are questions about the Chinese Mitten Crabs or if you have a sighting please let me know. If you want to learn more about the crabs, take a look at our website
http://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/FactSheet.aspx?SpeciesID=182
(Yes I had to include it).
Thanks for reading and helping.

Welcome Darrick. Thanks for the info, I haven't seen any yet, and hope I won't in the near future, but I will contact you with any catches this season.

NJ has a mitten crab reporting program through NJ Fish and Game. I assume you are coordinating with them?

Since most of the mitten crabs are caught by commercial crabbers, it stands to reason that most of the blueclaw crabs are also caught by commercial crabbers. Recreational crabbers are only catching a fraction of the total harvest?

That rationale doesn't even come close to working. Mitten crabs and blue crabs have completely differrent habits and tendencies. Blue crab is a swimmer and, therefore, will come up off the bottom on a line. Mitten crabs, since they are not swimmers, will drop a bait as soon as it lifts from the bottom.

More importantly, the sample size of the mitten crab catches here in the US is so tiny, you can't possibly equate it to anything related to the blue crab catch.

I am in contact with agencies up and down the coast. Most of which will send me the information to follow up on instead of handing it in house. I will also alert an agency if I receive a report to keep them informed.
In the wild they have been known to travel more then 500 miles to find a suitable habitat to grow, hence the nickname "the Walking Crab". Most of the catches, that have been confirmed, were in pots and traps. A few (two) were by lines.

Not sure what killing it before turning it over achieves? Are you assuming it is going to be released by DNR after study?
