Hi guys!

Happy I found this forum.
Does anyone know if there are crabbing spots near York town (off the Colonial Pky)?
I am trying to find the closest spots near Toano.

Thanks;

You can stop anywhere along the parkway to crab. You just have to toss hard or walk in n drop-check. You can also use the Yorktown Park pier but you have to pay by the day. There is a free pier over the bridge at Gloucester Point. Nice place. Beach, pier, park, bait the whole nine yards. You should get there early for a good spot on the pier. Was theere last week. Caught 2doz keepers.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Hello Crabby Crabber!
I plan on going to try my luck @ Gloucester Point tomorrow; how early should I get there?
Also, how deep is the water by the pier?

Thanks;

I take my boat out there occassionally. Not real deep water. 4-9 foot for the most part....

Good luck out there. Post your results.

I like to hit there very early in the heat of the summer. 4am-9am is when I like to hit it.

I went to the Gloucester Point Pier this past Saturday @ about 9:20 am and stayed 'til about 11:40 am. Didn't do too well at all - I got 6 keepers.
Joefroggy, are you saying if I go extra early like you did I may have better luck?

Thanks for your input.

I dont know about this time of year. I have done well in July and August when water was low 80s temp. I take my boat out there and get out from 6am-11am. I do best the first few hours.

One trip I got on the water by 430am and they were on fire for about an hour and a half, then steady after that.....

Joefroggy

p.s. what was the tide like ? was it flat tide or was it moving in or out?

Heading up the Colonial Parkway towards Williamsburg from Yorktown, there are 2 bridges with public parking areas, the second one has a good spot right next to the bridge, the side closest to the parking, and on the right side of the bridge as you are walking towards it.  I used to set a 50ft line there with 8 baits and wade out to and walk it and would do pretty well there.  but you do need to get there early!  I always prefered the "butt crack of dawn" myself Smiley

JoeFroggy, the tide was moving in and out - quite fast too.

LrdDread, thanks for the location info.

Seems like that is a good time to go, have tide moving nicely. The one morning I was there doing very well very early, the tide was moving real fast. When it went slack it slowed down a lot....

Hey dredgecrab;

What type of pot do you use?
I've only crabbed once using the 2-ring nylon basket w/chicken leg tied inside.

Do you think this will work off the Croaker Landing Pier?

Thanks man.

i use a a commercial crabpot. bait them with bunker. i dont know if you can tell the bottom but there are a lot of shell piles. stay off of them. it is best in the mud leads.

Danny, I grew up crabbing along the Parkway. I always favored crabbing right under the bridge at Indian Field Creek (one of the two bridges along the parkway - this is the second one on the way from Wmsbg towards Yorktown. Parking is just past the bridge. I liked to go back across the bridge and down under it on the right side if you are facing towards Yorktown. Always had luck with handlines and traps right there in the shadow of the bridge. Brings back good memories. Good luck.

Maybe I"m crabbing in the wrong spot.  I got 2 dozen crabs out of the five pots I have out in the Mattaponi River, but they were all keepers.  And, you are right, crab in the mud.

on the mattaponi, i see the best crabbing closer to the deep water. we use 50 feet of rope and 5/8 frames to hold the pots on the bottom.
