Just cleaned a batch before steaming for the first time, will never do it the other way again.  Very easy to clean and a joy to pick.  Just my $.02.

Didn't know clean before you cooked was a VA thing  my Mom's family grew up on the Northern Neck for many many generations grandfather and great grandfather were waterman there also and always steamed em live...... Is that more common down the tidewater l/ ower pennisula area Russ?
I know deep South does it.. Florida, TX, LA etc.. and up North .. but thought VA opted for MD style .......  but hey what in the heck do I know I was stil under the impression there are no crabs there anyway..... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Grin

Well from what I just read, no one in Maryland so far cleans them first. I guess they clean their Oreo cookies too before they eat them. That sugar and lard can be very toxic.
