Crab Hunter

« on: June 27, 2011, 09:38:37 AM »

I'm down for vacation in Corolla and brought the Tomcat III with me hoping to get into some crabs.  I'm on the hook for Tuesday night Crab dinner so I went out into the sound on Sunday to a do reconnaissance trip.  I went to the free ramp at the Whalehead club  which is 1.5 miles from where we are staying to put in.  The ramp is very shallow but not a problem for my 14' Carolina skiff.  I had to run at a shallow tilt to get out to the sound.  I cruised out about a mile or so off the ramp and started setting the first 10 traps.  The deepest water I found was about 5.5'.  I was the only one on the water so I was a little concerned that I may not find them, and the first four traps came up empty and untouched.  The fifth trap had a nice keeper in and got 4 more on the first 10 traps.  I set my remaining 15 traps and started to have at it.  I only crabbed for 3 hours and wound up with 42 big and heavy crabs.  I caught a lot of shorts and some really huge females which all went back.  I'm gonna hit it again on Tuesday bright and early with my brother in law, confident that dinner will be taken care of.

One other thing to point out;  I hit the bait shop across from the Whalehead club and bought some tackle and a map of the sound.  Nice friendly guy, and a great selection.  The tackle and fishing rods seemed reasonable but, the bait was pricey.  He was selling frozen chicken necks with 4-5  necks in a bag for $3.99.   I laughed when I saw this and went down to the Food Lion down the road and bought 16 wings and a dozen legs for around $10.  I'll get a report and some pictures from Tuesdays trip after I get back.

Thanks for the report and the tips TRex. We did the same thing last year at the same launch, which was our first time. We didn't catch as many keepers but we were happy with our limited success, given we were going in blind.

We'll be going back down next week and plan on doing it again.

Are there any features or characteristics out on the water that you noticed produced more crabs?

Just noticed this, hope this gets to you before you head out.  As you leave the ramp look for a permanent green channel marker and start crabbing out towards the middle from there.  I treid to look for 4 - 6 feet of water also.  Let us know how you make out.
