The answer is 2 fold, die with it, or get over it and move one - [shiz] happens. One can only control ones self. So for your own well being think about it, get over it and move one - it was only a moment in the road of life - don't let it be a pot hole in life's highway.

Na there are lots of people still alive because of my Zoloft. There is a saying Don't let anyone Ruin Your Day - it is hard when you are in a swamp full of gators to remember your main objective was to drain the swamp.

Each day there are morons out there, just a common fact and when we least expect it, when not on top of our game I feel we all qualify for moron status at sometime or another. So look at it this way, today was his day, tomorrow maybe be yours. However all consistently repeating offenders should be shot on sight. laugh laugh laugh laugh

It happens to me all the time. I usually argue and cuss but today i asked nice and he told me tough sh#t. I had my 9 year old son on the boat. I had 4,000' of line in the water and had no time for him. i called dnr and it was my best expeience ever with dnr. They were there in 10 minutes and made him pull his line, cited him for buoys to small than another guy was about 50' from me on other side, which i said nothing about and they made him move also. They are good for something after all.  Wink

Hoffman, you must have and idiot magnet on that boat. But thats cool they came out and took care of it. We must have some new guys on the pax I was stopped a couple of weeks ago and the expierience was very good, nice guys. I wander if they would do the same for a rec. hopefully so, Friday dad and I went out and two guys laid on either side, one was very questionable and the other was well with in the 100'. He actually had the nerve to ask me between my run how the crabs were running. Since the crabbing sucked and I was getting ready to move I told him that we were hammering them and we got are bushel in less than two hours and was headig in good luck. If I was actually catching crabs I would have had some issues.

Unless you read COMAR or know the rules about the 100', it is not listed in the booklet that they give you when you buy your license.  Even if it was written in the book, how many people take the time or have taken the time to read it?  There are a ton of crabbers out there that just dont know.  It sure is funny how many on this board was once in the same shoes.  I even read a post from a "comm" the other day that claims to know all but was "surprised" about the 100' rule.  hmmmmmmmmmmmm  how quickly we forget where we started at.   Huh Huh

I can't speak for others but as for myself when I started crabbing 22 years ago I did not know of a 100 ft rule then, but also never needed a law to tell me to stay 100ft away, it was just common courtesy to do so unless you asked the guy that was already there. Just because you are new at crabbing, fishing, boating, hunting, driving or what ever there is no excuse not to know the laws. Even after 22 years I take the time to read the rules every year, it is our responsibility to do so, I understand that some of the laws are not easy to interpret but the ones like the 100ft rule are cut and dry. Now, common unwritten waterman and boating courtesies I can see were a newbie may not know and will learn through experience.

When i was 16, I knew everything.  Somehow though I've grown dumber evey year since then.  I use to contribute it to alcohol, but I don't drink that much any more and every year I find there is more and more that I don't know.

I dont see the rule on the DNR website.

What exactly is the law?  Not what you think it should be, but the exacly law.

100 foot from another person trap?   Please explain to the non-experienced people.

The regs cover distance from Trotline - not traps

A. An individual may not set or fish a trotline, crab net ring, or collapsible crab trap within 100 feet of a trotline.

The first line. Cut and dry imo.

While I suppose you could interpret that to say that one can run a trotline through a guys pots it would be contradictive of itself saying if I lay a trotline it supersedes the right of a man using collapsible traps or rings who was already on the location.

Applying some common sense to the verbiage, I would expect this language was developed in the name of Safety. Some of the Commercial Vessels are rather large compared to a 14 or 16 footer. If you are working a 25 or 30 ft boat you need much more maneuvering room then someone with much lighter and more responsive 16 footer.

100 feet is not the great of a distance, if one is crabbing solo their attention is divided all the time - 100 feet can give the reaction time to avoid an accident.

Once on the line you are committed unless you throw the line off. Running traps is a one on one thing, if you miss one just turn around and go back. At anytime you can break away from your route of travel instantly - not so with the line.

If you were laying, 2000, 3000, or maybe 5000 ft of line and you get down to the last 1000 ft and see a string of traps what would you do? It was not intentional, trap floats are much smaller and harder to see especially in rough water. Sometimes mine are spread out in a longer string then my 1200 foot line. I can not count all 30 floats unless I am in the middle of the  string and even then the water must be rather flat.

I do not feel the 100 foot regulation was put in place to give anyone the advantage of "A SPOT".

I feel most often it is interrupted as such. I feel such an interruption is wrong.

JMHO.

It is very hard to turn a 40' boat in 100'. Some times a 20' boat with a dipper over, needs every bit of a 100' to maneuver.

Especially if there is wind.
