Crabbed a lagoon in Galveston with my dad today.  First line in the water at 630am.  20 hand lines and 4 baskets total.  Chicken and turkey necks was the bait.  Made runs every 20-30 minutes until 11am.  Only catch was 4 undersized males and 1 female.  Saw many dead crabs in the 2 inch range floating by the bank.  Only good part about the day was spending time with the old man and plenty of beer.  Hope we get rain soon and the conditions change.  We need it very badly.  Haven't been to this location in about a month and the water was extremely low in the surrounding ponds.  Hope others had better luck on the water today than I did.

I'm probably gonna wait another month or two before going again unless we get a ton of rain soon.  If anybody is having any luck along the Texas coast please share.

when the water is that warm, you won't catch much of anything, once it hits about 82 we don't crab shallow water.  this is surf-crabbing weather!

I think the water is too warm for any type of crabbing from the bank.  Look at the link below for water tempertures for Galveston. At Morgan's Point where I crab, the water temperature is 88 degrees.

http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/wgof.html

Since I'm also having problems finding crabs and when I do, it's not many of them and those are undersized, I think the crabs have gone to deeper water where the water is cooler.

I also crab on the Gulf side of the North Jetty on the Bolivar Peninsula. With the very warm water temperatures, I have a hunch there might be lots of crabs right at the Boat Cut where there is a current and also some very deep water. The only problem; from the base of the North Jetty, it's a very, very long walk out on the jetty to the Boat Cut.

I know where Highland Bayou is near Bayou Vista where I launch my kayak at Louis' Bait Shop, but I've never heard of Highland Bayou Park.

Looks like I'll be googling this park to see where it is.

It's behind (Ron Hoover ?) RV/Boat dealership on I-45 at the exit for 519 in La Marque. You can also get to it by paddling up the bayou from Louis'.

I might have to paddle from Louis. I looked on a map of saw Maxwell Rd and at some intersection, the map said "key access gate" before it gets to the park. Is the park a public park?

Are you crabbing in the bayou or in that pond across from the tennis courts?

The big pond is an old sand pit that opens into the bayou . Good winter trout fishing. It is a public park and you can get to it by going behind the Shell station or the gate by Ron Hover RV/Boats

I thought that was where you were. Never figured out how that place has so many crabs at times.

You ever crab there?  I did well earlier in the year there but not so good the last couple of times.  Had a buddy that used to crab there before hurricane Ike and used to catch nearly 3 dozen good sized males every trip. Many females too but those go back in the water Grin

I think the crabs have gone to deeper water where the water temperature is cooler. Catching crabs from the bank has been terrible, but with my kayak anchored out in deep water (4'-7'), crabbing has been good.

Yes I have crabbed there. My parents built a beach house on the west end in 1975 and I have been going there ever since. I never knew about those ponds until about 5 years ago. I actually read about them on this site. My 1st time I went there I filled up a 50 quart igloo and them some in a 5 gallon bucket in an afternoon. I have had some good days since Ike but nothing like my first time out there. I have been a few times this year and my brother has went there a lot this year but have not done very good.

If we don't get any rain soon you can forget 65th street . I just rode back there and I'm not sure which pond your crabbing , but some are dried up.
