Hello.
I live in Carroll County, Md and my boyfriend and I are plannin a crabbin trip this weekend.  This will be my 2nd time ever crabbing and my first time on the boat and I wanna catch alot.   Grin  I was just wondering what the best spots where this time of the year??   Huh  We are willing to drive.  I think we would prefer not to drive more then 1/2-1 hour past Sandy Point though.  But if there is a really good place we might.  We went to Sandy Point a few weeks ago and crabbed of the pier and caught a few but none were big enough to keep.  Is Sandy Point a good place to go using a boat??  Any suggestions would be great.  Also what kinda permit do we need to get to launch a boat from Pa in Md??  His dad's boat is from Pa.  Any help would be great.  The sooner the better....he gets mad when I don't know exactly what I want us to do.
Thanks alot!!

I would recommend Crab Alley Marina.  $10 one time launch fee and you will get some decent crabs.  Take exit 39b off of RT 50 (across Bay Bridge).  Off exit, go straight for a couple miles until you come to a T.  Take a left and follow to Crab Alley Rd.  Take a Right and the road ends at the marina.

Crab Alley is good, but if you are looking a bit closer to Sandy Point Marina, here is a spot.  Put in at Sandy Point and head south towards the Severn River.  There will be three easily visibly large red and white towers on your right.  Crab on the side of that penninsula (the one with the towers on it) that is on the Severn River side.  Crab in about 10' of water (hopefully you have a depth finder). Grin  My uncle and I crabbed there many times four to five years ago and usually made a killing.  This is the spot I always go to if my primary spot isn't working.  Questions? Comments? Reply now!

Do you know if there is any certian pass or sticker that we have to get to be able to launch our boat from PA at Sandy Point??  Thanks for the advice Madcrab.  We will have to go try there.  Is Crab Alley anywhere near Sandy Point??  I mean could we drive there in the boat from Sandy Point or not??  Has anyone been crabbing at Sandy Point at all this year??  Was it any good??

Jamie, as long as your father's boat has a current (2003) , valid Pennsylvania registration on it you are good to go.  Be aware that if you launch at any of the county-controlled boat ramps in Queen Anne's County or Talbot County you will require a ramp permit, available from sporting goods stores along Rt. 50.
Good crabbin'!!

I would stick with going to the Severn because you don't need a permit to put in at Sandy Pointe (reread Crabpop's input) and if you do put in there, you would have to drive to the opposite side of the bay to get to the Kent Narrows and Crab Alley.  Last year I did horrible at Crab Alley, and the crabbing is supposedly worse this year.  I've moved on to a new spot (sorry, can't say  Grin) that is very near to my suggestion and not done any worse than two dozen.  Do what you feel comfortable with and good luck!
