staying at barrier island station for the week and want to try crabbing for the first time. i understand genecrabman is the super expert at this - any tips for a total newbie?

I'm not an expert in the area but, pretty much anywhere on that you can find a bulkhead or dock on the Currituck sound should get you crabs.  I crabbed from my boat out of Corolla earlier this year and did very well.  Several folks were crabbing from the docks at the Whale head club and were catching there.  Any bait shop should be able to tell you where to find a decent spot to access the sound.  Good luck and let us know how you made out.
