Went out today with 1000 foot of line and found a spot we went to last time. We saw one buoy and investigated to ensure we didnt lay on top of someone and thought we saw the other buoy. We lay our line and then see a commercial guy running a line right where we had just laid so we run up to his boat to let him know before it was a huge tangle. He acted like we did something wrong and told us he had 6000' feet of line out witrh an attitude liek we did it on purpose. This is after I already told him we were pulling our line cause we didnt see his buoy, not to mention we saved a huge mess of a tangle by being on top of things. HE had laid his line from Hart miller towards the beach at rocky point right accross the river.

How am I supposed to see two buoys 6000' feet away when soemone lays directly accross a river, and then why do i get attitude after that? I have a lot of respect for commercial guys and had no intention of laying on top of him but I lose respect when i get the "im a commercial guy so this is my water, you dont belong here"

End of rant.

I call it uncommon courtesy.  Regardless of the other person's reaction it sounds like you took the high road by:

1.  Looking carefully before laying.
2.  Owning up to a faux pas & notifying the other crabber.
3.  Picking up your line.

Some folks just don't have patience or people skills and it is hard to keep cool when faced with that type of personality.  Gotta figure he has folks do that all the time but unlike you, others may not even look or care about laying over his line.

You did the courteous & respectful thing which is most important and an example of how we should all treat each other.

You did the best you could given the situation, do not judge all commercial fellows by the reaction of one. In my book you did what you could do, done what you should have. Now you need to suck it up and get over it.

There are 1000 more time the recreational crabber out there then commercial and I am sure there are more of us like him then not. Give credit to the fact he was having a bad day and approach the next commercial guy with the same respect you diid this one.

My experience of running into a Bad commercial crabber has been 1 out of many, most give you the respect you give them.

The same is to be said of other crabbers, however my experience with other crabber are more on the negative side but only because they are more of them.

I am not putting you down as I admire what you did. However other people do have bad days. Maybe it was his day. Maybe tomorrow will be yours when you act out of character......which may not be your norm, but if it is the one and only time I meet you.........it will be my impression of you.

I understand you were just venting also Wink

Thanks for the input, I did what I could and I had my line out of the water in less then 15 minutes. I understand it can get frustrating when it happens but there is no need to act ignorant about it when I did what I could(commcercial guy).

I certainly dont assume all commercial guys are like this and will move on. We all know how annoyed we get ourselves when you cant wait to get on the water, and something like this happens which sets the tone for the rest of the day.

BTW we got 3 dozen really nice dark crabs with 90% of the going 6+ inches up to 7 1/4". Caught 95% of the keepers in 8-9 feet of water, half our line was laid in 4-5.

Next time you see just one buoy, ask the commercial guy where his line is laid.
I've had as many as 60 traps placed on top of my line, because people didn't bother to ask.
Imagine what crabs can do to a baited line, while waiting for people to move their gear.

Holy cow.... From hart miller to rocky point. Thats a long line, not to mention right through boat traffic to hart miller. 6000 away I don't think anyone could have seen the other bouy.

Sears is running a sale on glasses....2 pair, one pair price.

Regs say the vessels red and green lights have to be visible one mile under 12 meters, 2 miles over 12 meters. White 2 miles for both.
If he doesn't  have lights on, he has no complaint.

BTW it's light enough at rec starting time to see a long way.
By regulation, lights have to remain on until official sun up or in low visibility after sun up.

I would take a 13 foot skiff with a 15 merc "miles" off the coast. Ocean side. Weather permitting... Many times, many miles in the sound.  Wink Cool

Thats the thing I didnt even see him, he was almost up on the island so there was no outline on the horizon to see, and his boat was maybe a 20-22 footer not a full size work boat. Trust me if I had any idea someone was in the area or laid there i wouldnt have.

For one i dont like being right on top of other crabbers.

Secondly, I was on the water right at legal time and the last thing I wanted to do was waste 30-45 minutes of it like I did laying and pulling and laying my line again. I usually am forced to go after work during the week which is about 730 by the time i get on the water, this was the first time iw as able to get out at the time I like to be out.

Now that was JUST WRONG. He done went and laid his line over another mans line (injury)

Now you expect that man to tell the (injured) how many crabs he did not get (Insult)

Next time, go up to the buoy and look into the water to see which way his lines are running.  Then you have an idea of where the buoy will be.  When I go, and if Im not the first one there, my mate is automatically looking for buoys figuring out where guys are.  He is also looking at boats and the directions they are going.  If I see a buoy and a boat way way away coming towards me, i assume its his buoy and move on.  Its still hard though.  I laid over another comm. last week cause him and another guy had the exact same buoys, and I got confused.  It happens to everyone.

Next time drag your line off quick and then pull it in.

Never though about that, thats a good idea though and Ill keep that in mind. Being a commercial yourself if you didnt know what I was doign would you get mad if you saw someone feet from your buoy looking at it though? Serious question.

Well, I would assume thats what you were doing.  Just ride up and cruise by, don't stop and act like your fooling with it.  Shine a light into the water to see easier.

Ray,  In all honesty recs shouldnt be starting early enough to need to shine a light in the water to check for a comms buoy.  Correct me if I'm wrong...

True, but nothing says they aren't allowed on the water to get a spot picked out.  And sometimes the water is murky.  I'm saying use the light so you don't have to be dead on the buoy to be able to see the line.
