I'm slightly confused, if a trotline buoy has two lines going in oppisite directions how does finding the line determine which way he is laying? I know you should still be so many feet away but how can you tell which way the baited line is running just from looking at the bouy line?

plus nor knowing which way it runs sets you up to approach wrong and wrap line in if prop.........that should make com happy.

I would approach carefully, then look front or back.  Pretty sure I would be aware of which boat is in that path...

Most comms have a buoy on their anchor.  MOST, not all.  However, it doesn't show you which way the baited line is going but it at least gives you two directions to look.

I know it can be an anxious time, but I try to get to the area I want to crab at least 15-20 mins early and just hang out and observe who is doing what and where. Last weekend I had a commercial guy ride over to me to tell me I was sitting on top of his line. He also offered his insight on where other productive lays would be nearby.(No I didn't take his advise, but we still did well) Wink I waited until he got on his line and went by before beginning to lay out. The extra 15 minutes can wind up saving three times that much time if you have to pull and re-lay. Some times I think I would hate to be a crab in certain areas with all the gear that can accumulate when people think that is the only place a crab would dare live.

I have been on the other side of this one as well and have seen guys run to "their" spot and start laying out within seconds of getting there and lay right over two of us and get upset because we were there.....talk about frustrating......

On the bright side, apparently you and/or your crew made it back safely and we all need to be thankful for not only being able to enjoy our time on the water but also being healthy enough to make a return trip!!!

Good luck!

Next time, go up to the buoy and look into the water to see which way his lines are running.  Then you have an idea of where the buoy will be.

Mr. Ray, sounds so simple but I never thought of that.  Started a thread a few weeks ago asking for advice on how to avoid comm lines.  Had done it twice in a two week period due to mismatched buoys.  Still felt bad even though they were mismatched.  One of the two comms was very civil about it, the other not so civil.  Either way, I now have another tool to avoid the situation.  Thanks.

Is'nt the anchor line thicker than the trot line? Mine is.

good point...  Dont forget about the idiot recs that have blinded you with their million+ candle power spotlights from Harbor Freight Tools while you are attempting to lay your line (legally).   wall
Huh? Whenever a spotlight is in my eyes, it's ALWAYS a comm. Since I am just an idiot rec, I always shine back. I figure it's how the comms say "Hi".

Lots of comms flash their lights at you if you lay over them, or sit on their line.  Just an FYI.

I don't enjoy the comm vs rec argument either. It just seems that there has been quite a bit of unneeded censorship lately. These are just words on crabbing forum.

Thought I'd take a "quick look".....   In the last 30 days, In the complete BCA, 1 topic and 5 individual posts were moved for review. None where deemed fitting for the forum by the 6 mod's or the Boss. None were returned to the open forum. In the MD report section alone, there were 259 post just this week.... Granted that number contains topics that were over a week old. But you get the point. Cool

For some reason I'm posting this although, i'm smarter then to get into this dog fight, but I don't think there was any comm vs rec fighting.  EVERYONE should just drop it and move on.  Done, that's it, I'm gone.

yeah ...Ive blinded a few times in the dark while  baiting my traps up... Embarassed  small headlamps is all i need....but a bucks worth of reflective tape on a buoy would be nice and help save some [curd] to deal with in the morning( can even see them with a red light )...heck I'm a rec and am smart enough to know that Grin
