I remember Blue Gables, but it was in the White Marsh area on Rt 40.   It closed about 25 years ago or so...   I had some Great crabs there....

My husband and I went to Gablers about 10+ years ago with a group of friends. It was wonderful! Just bushels of crabs dumped in the middle of your newspaper-covered picnic table. All we had was the crabs, corn-on-the-cob and cold beer...delicious! I have heard that Gablers is no longer in business. How sad!

It was A sad day there when they decide not to open it sat vacant for about 2 years before they bulldozed it. I used to steam crabs there part time till the end. Still haven't found a better crab or crab house. Although Prices Seafood in Havre De Grace is a close 2nd.

i was searching the net for crab recipes and entered gabler's crab house and found my way to the blue crab forum.  i found this post and wanted to make a small tribute to a place that i thought was wonderful.  i was stationed at edgewood arsenal at the end of the 70's and it didn't take long to learn to love the chesapeake crabs.  we heard about gabler's and gave it a try.  i don't think we went anywhere else for crabs after that.  our first impression was that we had entered a set from the movie "deliverance".  it was hard for us to imagine that such a rustic, unassuming place could be found so close to baltimore and DC.  we were still new to maryland.  whenever i think about crabs, i think about gabler's.  i returned to edgewood arsenal through the 90's and into the new century as a contractor and as a reservist.  i tried to make the trip to gabler's each year.  one year, don't remember which, i heard it was for sale. the next year when i tried to make reservations, the phone only rang, never an answer.  i drove out to the place and i'm sorry i did because it was closed.  if i hadn't actually seen it, the place would be forever open in my memory.  maybe it was because i was newly married and my wife and i were starting out in life together that the memory of visiting gabler's is so vivid.  whatever it is, it was a treat to go there and the crabs and beer were the best ever.
