I steam mine, clean before steaming, and leave them on for about 20 minutes.

Boiling is the same; 20 minutes.

I wait until there is a rolling boil and then dump in the crabs.
When the water comes back to a rolling boil...20 minutes.

Try steaming some crabs some time. You might like them better!

I steam clean mine (17 mins after a good steam is going)  Wink  Grin Grin

Boil them for five minutes after the water comes to a boil, shut off the fire and let them soak for another 20 minutes.

Actually the OP is in PA.

Just curious, out of those who shout from the rooftops that boiling crab is against all that is good and righteous, how many of you have actually eaten a boiled crab?

Sorry, it just bothers me when folks say their way is the only right way.  I've had boiled in Looseana & they tasted like... crab.    Grin

Exactly.......I've done both and notice little to no difference. If you put a steamed crabbed and a boiled crab in front of me and I ate both I would have no idea which is which if they are both cooked correctly.

You would know mine, they would have a quarter inch of seasoning on top just waiting for me to dip the meat into...

the shells come out cleaner when boiled, no difference in meat. I think the watery, mushy problem is from poorly culled, cooked, and or dead crabs . I caught a bushel last week steamed 2 batches then boiled a dozen or so in the bottom part of my two tiered steamer. no mushy or watery crabs. If you put seasoning on them right after draining, i bet many hard core steamers wouldnt know by taste alone, you dont get the ooze as much on the shell

Of the boiled crabs I've had the meat has been mushy. Whether they were done "right" I don't know. I will reserve final judgments til Capt Ron arrives in Sept.

Had both, and then some.........prefer steamed......that being said, if it's wet/mushy, probably light crab or dead on entry. Never had a full crab get water when boiling.
