Do rays feed on crabs? I figure they do and it helps explain why this year hasn't lived up to expectations. Plus I didn't notice many jellyfish my last time out.. Could it be the water isn't very salty? Or maybe the rays ate them too!!

I was using my bucktail rod at Beaver Dam last month and hooked five large cow nose rays in 5 foot of water. I only got one to the boat side. The rest took off in the stream and broke me off. The marina said they they have had an influx of them back there. Not sure if it was the crabs that drew them back there though or just the warm shallow water. They all hit my bucktail tipped w a bunker tail.

i dont know about any other species of rays, but the cownose ray found in the chesapeake will destroy crabs if given a chance. when i was younger i used to make money off of their wings. would go into our local bait and tackle store, pick up a dozen peelers, snag some #1 hooks, refit my 7' surf/pier rod with 40# line and have at them. half a peeler per hook on a rig, and i would just snag those suckers like crazy. wouldnt be in the water more than 3 minutes before i would see my pole bend over and watch my line slice through the water as they took off with them.

never seen anything work better at catching rays.

A ray will eat about 75% of it's weight every day in crabs, clams, mussels and seed oysters. Average ray ! kill is 55lbs for a southern and 40lbs for cownose. Most days I bowfish I get 800 to 1000lbs of rays.

I make a mean sea duck sandwich. There is nothing wrong with them if you treat 'em right. Not hard to do either!
