Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.  I was crabbing on the West River Saturday and as I was culling the crabs just caught on the last trip down the trotline, I noticed one crab was lethargic...I blew in his face, even put him in the water and nothing...He wasn't just playing dead, he seemed to have died within minutes of being caught. (no more than 10 min max).   Anyone else ever experience this happening?   he wasn't a papershell..didnt have any puncture wounds from another crab either.  Just found it strange thats all. Huh Huh

It could have been infected with Hematodinium sp.  The parasite consumes oxygen from the crab's blood and tissues which causes it to become weak and lethargic, and to eventually die.

I had a crab do that once.  As soon as he broke the surface and took a good look at my face, I think he died of fright... Cry
