I usually go in about 9-13 feet with my traps. I ussually don't sweat about it that much as long as i am at the bottom of a drop off(if it is shallow water everywhere else).

In the Pocomoke Sound over 9 ft. would be a deep hole.. My pots are usually in 6 foot or less. During minus low tides the tops of the peeler pots are actually out of the water.

I usually crab in less than 12 foot of water sometimes no more than 3. I always try to set my pots on the edge ; where the sand meets the mud. I taught my boys with a pole , they would feel around till they found the edge and then set the pots . after a few weeks they new where it was and didn't need their poll till they went prospecting new bottom.

In the 'backwater' here in NJ, with the tides I have, (4'+), I want to keep the traps covered at even the lowest tides. That means I want to set them in at least 6' of water at mid tide. I don't have a problem puttin them in deeper, 12', even. Crabs are very mobile. They will find the traps where ever the depth is. I thinks it's more important on "where" - instead of "how deep".

You can only do so must in 8 hours in Va. The legal time is 6am to 2pm April, Sept, Oct, and Nov. During May thru August it is 5am to 1pm..

Crabbyboy ; I find it an advantage especially when competition is strong or in changing weather conditions .I think the trick is to find them not wait for them to find your pots. I think Jack summed up the 8 hr. work day.

During the hours above you can be working your pots. The pots are in the water 24/7. After those hours you can set any new pots that are on board.

when we start crabbin in the spring in the sounds crab in water from 2 to 7 ft once the water warms up we move to deeper bays and rivers .start crabbin in water 7 to20 ft deep think spring |
