snood clips

Until now we have always tied the bait directly to the trot line and were looking to do something a little different this next outing by using snoods, so I had a couple of questions:

1. I have heard that snoods work better because it makes it easier to attach the bait and lessens the drop off rate on the line.  I was just looking for some confirmation that people have better luck using snoods.

2. Rather than putting a loop every 4-5 ft in the trot line and attaching a snood to the loop, I have read a lot about using snood clips and was wondering if those provided an advantage in ease of baiting the line and in being able to vary the spacing between baits.

3. If anyone has used the clips, I have heard mixed stories as to whether or not the clip going over the trot stick causes enough vibration to cause crabs to drop off due to the disturbance to the line.

4. I am having a hard time finding these locally, anyone know of any stores I could find these in the Baltimore/Annapolis area?  I have tried Anglers by the Bay Bridge and they carry these seasonally and won't have them in for some time.

5. Finally, I have heard a lot about using bungee snoods, I am assuming that this allows ease of removing the bait from the snood and re-using the snood?

I was just in anglers a few weeks ago and could of sworn i saw a bunch.  Try the other two shops along 301. i think there on the other side of the bridge tho.  Bass pro shops has something similar online.  I think there considered decoy clips and are little smaller but they should work the same.

When I brought up the subject of snood clips years ago, the consensus was that the vibration of the clips going over the propstick would scare off the crabs. I thought the idea of using the clips would make it easier to bait and rebait the trotline.  But, what do I know?

I got on to a new idea this year that just beats the heck out of snoods.  With snoods being so expensive to buy or make, I tried releasable wire ties.  Believe me they work great and are probably 1/3rd the cost of snoods.  They stay on the line or trap and are tightened by a pull on the wire tie and release with placing a thumb nail on the little tab. They do speed up the baiting or debaiting process.  Ace stores, Home Depot etc. have them in the electrical section.

Are you talking about a way to attach the bait to the line, or are do these wire ties hang down off the line 6-8"? If the latter...how do you attach them to the main line??

I'm a little late on the reply but here goes.  When using the wire ties, work the tie thru the rope just as you would with a snood and leave the tie open until you ready to bait up.  This way when you place bait in the wire tie you can pull it up tight to the wire tie and the rope.  When unbaiting, just release the tab and the bait falls out.  Simple enough and alot cheaper too.

Right on.  It's alot faster all around and cheaper than snood material or readymade snoods.

Agreed and they are free!!! I guarantee I can tie a slip faster than someone can mess around with a tie. un-baiting is just about as fast. Maybe RichWill is talking about using with heavy three strand twist? There is no "snood advantage" if he is tying tight to the mainline.
