trotline snags

with all the weather, expect them esp if crabbing near tree lined shore, potentially frustrating and damaging gear. I was lucky last time, snag was 100' from 2nd float, couldnt lift or free the snag so ran it as being careful when to dump the line. when it was time to go , i pulled the anchor on the snagged side and cut the snap/ swivel to the line, then pulled from the other side. If the snag was more towards the middle id cut, pull one side and reattach; Curious what other folks do, any tips? What do Comms do when you get a snag on 4000'?

I figure out which side it got snagged from and try to pull it in the opposite direction, otherwise, pull as hard as needed to free. Fortunately, I have yet to have the need to cut the line. I had several snags on Friday and each one was easy enough to free because the line had been pulled into the snag from running the line with the waves on the side of the boat.

I carry a spare jug or even a coke bottle
if you have to cut the line. Tie one end of the line to the bottle
run it from the other end, then tie that line to the line on the bottle
later you can put a swivel at that spot or a blood knot, if you want

trim off the ends

I've had to cut the line before. It aint too bad when you got a winder. A week ago I had a snag and I tied it off to a spring line cleat and jammed it. Popped it right out.

Just throw it on the winder and open the valve all the way
If the bow goes under, ease off on the winder.

I reckon your floats were too small if you sank it and the lead lines too short for the depth.

Everyone must begin some where. Doing it on your own is a hard way to learn. You need to keep trying, change what needs to be changed and get back on the horse. If you stopped trying to walk the first time you fell down, you would still be crawling..............

If I stopped trying the last time I fell down I'd have drowned drunk in a mud puddle
