On my first trip out, I got nothing.  I was using chicken backs, in topless  traps, but someone said the backs were too big.  Seems everyone feels necks are the way to go.  I cant find any at the store.  Can anyone send me in the right direction in the New Haven area?

Thanks

Hal

Every so often they have turkey necks or chicken necks at Ferraro's on Grand Avenue. A nice big bag for cheap.

That is a load of BS about chicken backs not being good enough!
A month ago I went out and got 63 keepers using backs and the odd snapper blue.
In fact the only difference I have found in crab tastes is that some days they prefer the fish over the chicken and vice versa!

I've done fine with backs too, though maybe next time I'll get out my cleaver and see if smaller bits do any better.  Dirt cheap when you find them.  Last time the label just said "Meat." I had to laugh.

thanks for the replies, I will chop the backs in half, and see what happens.

Also do not leave to much fat/skin on the backs as that covers the meaty parts the crabs really look for.

Heck about the only thing they are good for other than using them as crab bait is for making broth for soup!

Right, "Meat Soup!"  Mmm.  They wouldn't even vouch for it being chicken!

LOL Mystery Meat Soup?
Sounds like the lunch menu I had in Highschool.
About the worst chicken quarters I ever purchased was at a Shoprite store over 3 years ago going for $.39 a pound,
[dang] skin looked almost gray when I cut it up for bait!
Crabs seemed to like it just fine so it was worth it for me but I could not imagine anyone in their right mind eating it.
