Does anyone use topless traps in the Gulf? I am in Mississippi and have not seen anyone using them here. Are they superior to ring nets and if so why are they not used here?

I'd like to talk to some NC guys using topless traps. I check my traps every other day unless hitting my RCGL limit, then come back the next day. Have seen tourists with one now and then, but no one serious. Surely there are some, I'd like to learn and maybe switch. Until then, mine stay in for 3 tide changes....

Can't be pulled any faster than a net.

Exactly.   There's no way a ring trap should out catch a topless trap 2:1 let alone 10:1.

Y'all might have to move up to the Bull Moose trap - crabs might be too big for regular sized ones Grin
