Some of the 'degrees' never go on the water or eat a crab. Some are on a crusade, but most simply want to look good in the eyes of the green people. The green people sign their checks. Now the White House is pushing green- $535 million to 1 company (of 5) that went out of business. They don't care the cost or amount of waste and especially how many jobs are lost. The 'jobs czar' is Imelt, CEO of GE that pays no taxes and is sending thousands of jobs to China.

Funny, but no where in the article did they say they want to bring things back to colonial times. From the article
"In Maryland, annual harvests of river herring averaged 3.57 million pounds from 1950 to 1970, but have dropped to an average of only 45,570 pounds per year in recent years, an overall decline of almost 99 percent.
In Virginia, annual harvests which once averaged about 24.92 million pounds dropped to an average of about 85,000 pounds in recent years.
The Potomac River, which an 1896 government report called the "leading alewife stream" in the United States, has seen harvests drop from an annual average of 6.77 million pounds between 1960 and 1970 to an annual average of 7,148 pounds."
So do you think restrictions should be put into place to protect the Herring? Doesn't seem like many watermen are making a living catching herring.
Do you want the same thing to happen to the blue crab?
I'm sure you are against restrictions on oyster harvests as well. Last I checked Oysters were at less than 2% of historical levels.
If unrestrained fisherman didn't decimate the oyster population, the herring population and the crab population, government regulations wouldn't be necessary.

There's definitely a problem with the crabs, oysters, herring and Alewive.
I remember hashing this out some years back, regarding the harvest of female crabs......puts too much pressure on male crabs.
When you can keep big females, smaller males look less appealing and get tossed back......now, they do not.
There needs to be a balance, and I feel, some of the scientists in charge shouldnt be.

Just another KNOW IT ALL, Ray...........Oyster limits didn't help the Oyster industry,Limits were set in place for over 40 years..... Herring Limits will not save the Herring Industry and crab Limits will not save the crabs either....Water quality Killed the Oysters in the Bay, Water Quality cause the menhadden to not enter the Bay, and water quality will cause the crabs larvae to not live in the bay either............Then again I'm sure he knows that too.......JMO.

I just think your opinion is mostly false, dont mean your wrong.....just that I dont agree. I believe over harvesting is ABSOLUTELY a factor in the decline of each of the forementioned species....beyond that, I dont feel like arguing with you and Ray about it any more regarding it.

I feel like YOU trying to tell me about Oyster Harvesting would be like me tell you how to operate you BobCat..........Unless you nay sayers have ever Oystered or even worked the Bay, how can you tell someone that has. how things operate? Oysters will die if they're not worked......Even farm/Dock raised oysters will die if not worked..and I'm not arguing, by no means.......
Have you seen the NASA Pics of the run-off coming down the Bay? It's a GIANT SEPTIC TANK......But, you might be right..... Over Harvesting is Killing everything............
