Just moved here from KY, i have a 24ft run about id like to take some friends from home out on the bay, or river, ......somewhere on the water and catch some crabs we can eat, where do i go? how deep do i set pots and hand lines? which is better, chicken or bunker? best way to cook them? i have a stove on board the boat is that legal to cook them on the boat? do i need a license for recreational crabbing? we are planning on going sept 30th-oct 2nd  is it to cold? need lots of info never crabbed in va before only in NJ and they are  very very small up there

NO LICENSE FOR HANDLINES,OR TRAPS (TOPLESS/TRIANGLE TRAPS ARE CONSIDERED HANDLINES)
2 COMMERCIAL STYLE POTS PER PERSON
ELIZABETH RIVER
10 - 12 FEET,
COOK YES, (CLEAN FIRST) ID KEEP THE SHELLS ON BOARD FOR EVIDENCE JUST IN CASE THERES A SIZE ??

at the mouth of the river, or deep back in the river? if you were to look at a map, give me a land mark on google maps haha. and are there ramps to drop the boat in? (nice ramps)

NOTE ABOUT BOTH RAMPS, HAVE ALL YOUR STUFF IN ONE SOCK BEFORE YOU GET THERE, BOTH ARE 2 LANE RAMPS AND RATHER BUSY

THE ELIZABETH RIVER IS PRETTY BIG, PLENTY OF PLACES TO CRAB,
ID STAY IN THE SOUTHERN BRANCH, ANY WHERE FROM THE I 64 HIGH RISE BRIDGE TO THE NORTH CAROLINA BORDER

Really? i thought crabbing would be best out in the larger waters closer to the ocean??? what about the james river?
