I headed for the Scottish Highlands last week for a long awaited Red Deer Stag trip with a my cousin and a couple buddies.  The place was awesome and the hunting was spectacular.  The first day started off a little slow as there was only one stalker (guide) arranged for 4 of us.  They also do things differently there and don't head out hunting until after a proper breakfast at 8:00 AM.  I had a heart to heart with the stalker and told him we do things a bit differently here int he states and requested his presence before day break at 6:30 AM.  He took me and my cousin out first and we had two down before breakfast.  He got another stalker as well and that made it one on one for the other 2 hunters resulting in them bagging out by 2:00.  All the stags were nice but, I wound up with a real trophy that according to my raw score was 231 2/8 inches.  If my measurements are correct it would be the 8th largest on the SCI record books.  I'll have it officially scored when it gets back from the taxidermist but even if I'm off a few inches it should still be top 10.  Regardless, it's a stag of a lifetime for me and I'm thrilled with it.  Got some pics below of the trip

The guns we were shooting had sound moderators on the barrels which are quite common in Europe.  It didn't silence the gun but greatly reduced the sound.  It's kind of crazy in a country where it is illegal to hunt with a bow, that there are no restrictions on these. It's even crazier that they are available there but not here in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

prob a good thing they arent( suppressed firearms).....then there really would be a shortage of big bucks that go missing in the night...lol  good stag !!!

It really was an awesome hunt and it was very affordable compared to guided big game hunts in the US.  The cost to shoot the Stag was about $700,  room and meals were just over $100 a night.  Breakfast and dinner in the dining room were outstanding and they packed you a lunch each day.  Drinks were super cheap at the hotel also (per drink that is, we still managed to crank up a pretty hefty bar tab.)  The airfare was the most expensive thing at about $1,000.  We split a rental car to get there from Glasgow.  Total cost of the trip was under $3,000.  And part of the deal with the hunt was that if you did not get an opportunity to take a shot at a Stag, they would not charge the $700.  If you shot and missed or wounded one, you were still on the hook for it.  Here's a link to the hotel if anyone is interested.   The guy who runs it is named Aaron Winton. http://www.altnaharra.com/

I'm more of a single malt guy.  The hotel bar had a wall of single malts from throughout Scotland.   We ran them out of 5 or 6 different bottles and drank more than 15 different types.  It was unbelievably inexpensive too.  A 21 year old Glengoyne was the most expensive at 7 pounds a glass.  Most were only 2 or 3 pounds.

After a few weeks going through US Fish and Game and then customs, I finally got the mount back in my hands, can't wait to get an official score on him.  The taxidermist was a real artist.  If you're ever hunting the UK and need a true pro, look him up http://www.artaxidermy.co.uk/

Looks like a great trip and a really good price. I looked at the website and maybe I will be heading there one day to get one of those Stags!!
