Chick Magnet!

Decided to make a trip to dividing creek to wrap up the season.  Probably wasn't the best idea to party on a sat night until 2am when I had to be up at 430.  After sleeping thru the alarm finally woke up, hit Wal-mart for chicken and was on the road to DC at 630. Not my ideal start time.  Arrived around 730 at DC, hopped in the skiff and set out with the gf for her first trip to DC.

At this time the tide was still incoming after finding out that after all this time the tide chart I have been checking is about 3 hours off and is for the mouth of the creek. Had we not had a late start a 6 am launch would have made for for 5 hrs of steady crabbing.  This time of year I like to make a right out of the dock under the bridge. A few turns out we set up shop.  Instant action for 2 hours. We were pulling doubles, triples like it was our job. The only problem was many throw backs. Alot of 4 1/2 inch or borderline that we ended up throwing back. The gf pulled up 5 on 1 handline. Something I have never seen or even heard off. 2 were keepers and the others just under.

By 930 we had 3 dz nice males and moved up the creek as the action slowed.  We were in multiple depths ranging anywhere from 2 ft to 12ft and the crabbing was producing in each spot.  Moving around became the norm and we were picking a half dz here and there and still many throwbacks. There are many crabs at DC that seems like it will be a promising yr to come.

Once the tide changes the creek flooded producing it's rapid current that rendered the handlines useless.  Traps still producing until we could work the channels to get out of the strong points.  Called it quits at 115.  Back at the dock stumpy said he had a guy that day who filled a trash can full of crabs.  Alot of cars were in the lot and it was a busy day.

Final count wAs 65 that made for a great spaghetti and crab dinner and enough to satisfy the babysitters it a dozen so the gf could enjoy the day on the water. Cant wait to eat left overs tonight.

Weapons of choice were 3 capt Bruce topless traps (the only 3 that have survived DC) and 4-5 handlines. Chicken out performed bunker greatly. Bunker only produced close to a dozen all day in traps and handling.  It's been a great year and may have been the last trip of the season. Happy crabbing
