I was able to finally get my son to spend a day on the water with me today. Being how he has caught enough crabs, according to him.....we opted for a day in the flooded woods of the eastern shore. Wound up with a triple brace of nice wood duck drakes. We looked but could not find any other types of ducks that would allow us to keep shooting. I was proud of the way my son shot today, only going through a little more than a half box of shells to get the four that he claimed. All in all, it was an awesome day in the field. Every time we get to do something like this, I can see the excitement in his eyes. Reminds me of myself when I was his age. I hope his passion for the outdoors continues to grow and that I can keep up with him!

Great day I am sure his passion will keep growing for the outdoors and time spent with you But for you being able to keep up with him Not a chance Take it from me I am not sure if it is them growing up or us growing old but you wake up one day and your the one trying to keep up  |

Good stuff ! How old is he ? I take my 7 year old son with me most trips. He makes me call him captain when we are on the boat. I started letting him run the boat a little this year by next year he should be able to run the line. I wish the season never ended.

He is 13 now. After our duck dinner last evening he asked if we could go again this weekend. He says that he would rather do that than deer hunt Saturday. I breasted the ducks out, marinated in balsamic vin. dressing and grilled medium rare......It was the best duck I have ever had. I left a little skin on a couple of the breasts, if I ever come across any more of these, all the skin will stay with them!!!!! |

also hunted wood ducks this day. Couldn't get the hunting buddies out of bed so hunted the morning by myself. Saw 4 to 5 dozen ducks fly past me. I was sure to tell them they missed out.  |

Very nice.I started taking my son hunting when he was 3 or 4.I never started hunting untill I was around 36.Still bothers me to shoot living things but since he has been exposed to it from such a young age,he just plain loves it.my 6 year old daughter and my wife want to go this year!I cant believe it but cant wait to take them.I built my stands like condos just to accomodate kids,wife etc. even put outdoor carpet in them so kids can read,lay down etc. because they get bored sometimes so I made them as comfortable as possible for 2 reasons.#1 so they would go and #2 so they would be quiet.My son has seen me shoot about 14 deer so far.My wife says she wants to shoot a deer and she has never hunted so I bought her a 270 and I will back her up with my 300 or 30.06.How do wood ducks taste?We have a perfect place to hunt them but I di not want to shoot something I would not want to eat.I love Mallard and goose. |

I agree 110%!!! I marinated breasts in balsamic vinagrette for about 90 mins and grilled medium rare over an oak fire....totally awesome! Leave the skin on! |

My son started hunting with me at 5 yo. He was the youngest kid to get his hunter's safety card from his group of instructors in 17 years at 7. I didn't help him at all and he still scored in the mid 90's. He would rather hunt than eat! He now has over 30 deer under his belt with rifle, shotgun and muzzleloader. He wants to start bow hunting but I just don't have the time to be able to spend that it takes to be successful at it for him. I saw a bumper sticker that said " teach your kids to hunt and you won't have to hunt your kids". It is very true! Glad to hear your wife is interested. Mine is a animal lover and would never kill anything, but she doesn't have an issue with eating anything we harvest......women....just try to figure them out  |

My girlfriend just got her hunters safety this year. she made it through one day in the stand and hasn't been since. A comfy box blind would be more to her liking but I didn't find that out until the season started  She does like to duck hunt a lot more and got her first duck during early season. a wood duck. |

Went down that road many years ago.....every time I picked a gun up she would ask where are WE going? I thought I would fix her one year, during late muzzleloader I left her in her stand for about 4 hours in a heavy snow. I got back and her teeth were chattering so bad I could hear them at 10 yards. Next weekend she was right back out there...I knew at that point, I screwed up.......  |

yeah teal are also good.. but I think the Black Duck is the best eating.. I like the soy sauce, ginger, garlic and a little lemon marinade..... grilled served with a side of wild rice...... yum... I do brine my birds first then rinse well....... |
