Missed the best buck I've seen all season. Shot right under him. even have a few white hairs on my arrow vanes.

the good news is he was making scrapes before i shot at him so he might come back.

Guess that's just bow hunting.

I jumped a monster yesterday putting out corn for shotgun in a couple weeks that stopped and just looked at me for about 2 mins at 20 yards.  I debated taking my crossbow with me for just in case.  I'm an idiot.

Just be glad you didn't wound him.I have done that and it is a horrible feeling to find your trophy months later and get no meat from it.

good point madcrabber. The first buck I ever shot was a 130 class 9 pointer. We looked for 3 hours the night I shot him and found lots of blood but couldn't figure out where he was. Then it poured rain before morning and everything was washed away. Found him 2 days later with just part of his side visible floating in the pond on the property. didn't get any meat out of it. At least they could still mount him for my first deer.

Going along with that point I borrowed my buddies range finder for my hunt tomorrow night. I'm gonna range a tree that is right next to my corn, where I've seen all the deer walk by from this stand. At first I felt like a range finder was taking the easy way out, but I guess it will be much more ethical.

It sucks, but Im sure something benefited from it. Many animals may have made it through some tough times because of that kill. Nothing goes to waste in nature. Shot a doe 2 weeks ago, and let her lay for an hour before tracking her, perfect double lung and she didnt go but 60 yds....however, I wasn't 100% sure. As stated above, after giving her an hour, we went for the track and found her immediately. Something had already eaten out its inner hind.

Taking the "moral high ground" on this one FP? If you could legally feed them. you would too. I don't think of it as baiting, I think of it as training them. It can be a challenge to get them to stop where you want them to

Yeah, and rarely......monster bucks are taken on corn piles.....most of the time, its a 40 pounder muching all day and night....and occassional doe....20 turkey, 40 racoons and twice as many squirrels. Most deer traffic is at night.

Agreed, the only big buck I have seen on a corn pile was on youth day several years ago. I don't put corn in the woods as the squirrels seem to eat more than the deer do.

im on private ground so I could do whatever I want ....but I dont.....just not a fan of spending a ton of $$$ on feed...its expensive enough to hunt.....kinda like throwiung a 40lb of necks overboard and crabbing by it...lol

there is soooo many deer in mD it seems like you wouldnt need to feed them to kill them jmo

It can get expensive if you are buying the corn. The farmer that I hunt on doesn't charge me for the corn because I kill for him. He loses close to 100k each year to the deer. I haven't put a kernel of corn out yet this year. And yes, we have shot 5 in two outings. Where it really works well is when we have to get deer into an area that they can be harvested when they are near houses etc. Once they get hooked on it, it's just a matter of time. I admit, its not what I would call hunting but it can get rather interesting. I will be getting some corn out this weekend to get ready for youth day in two weeks. There is nothing like the look on a kid's face when they get some good shooting.

bucks like that are few and far between in PA....but we see 4-5 every week in MD...    sucks for me I guess...lol

That price is not too hateful actually when a bushel of corn is floating around $7.50. By the time they bag it and ship it, that price sounds about right. A bushel of corn is 56 pound at about 9% moisture. I can remember buying 100 pound bags for $4.00, just a few years ago.

me too...and Ive killed some.....but nothing compared to the ones I see come out of MD....i know a guy who has over 10 mounted and they all score over 140"( ones a 23 pt that scores over 200))....all from Balt county   ( I have 5-6 friends who hunt MD)  and all their biggest bucks have come from MD....

The storms didn't bother us much in Balto Co. The demand for corn for ethanol is what seems to be keeping the price up. Now they are talking about adding 5% more to each gallon of gas. Corn was right around $10 a bushel earlier this summer year. If the demand for ethanol keeps getting to be more, corn could hit $15 before too long. I still think our grains should be equal to or higher than a barrel of oil. We have our own oil here but they can't grow corn in a sand dune.

I have seen some huge deer some from the MD eastern shore but not that many from Baltimore county. I live in Baltimore County and hunt both. I have shot a 8 pointer the last 2 years and still waiting for my first deer this year.

had one run up to the stand tonight...heard it running and by the time I grabbed my bow and grunted he was at 20' from the bottom of the tree...turned on light and went to full draw and he bolted.....guess thats why its called  huntin and not killin
