Last time Ed & I hit the water, we finally filmed his cleaning method.  It is the easiest, quickest way I have seen to clean before cooking.  Hope this offers some ideas.

There is also a new video from that day on the Wye.  Please enjoy the really bad jokes we are bantering back and forth!   Smiley  But boy, what a great day that was.

When I have time I do the same exact thing.  How long do you guys steam the "precleaned" crabs?  Thanks for sharing the video.

Exactly the way I do it, sans the screen. (Which BTW is a good idea)

This year I got a new Gilmour nozzle that has a "flat" spray pattern which cleans out the body cavity in 1/2 the time as opposed to the "stream" pattern that I previously used.

I do that when making crab spaghetti sauce.Sautee the bodies in olive oil and garlic then add sauce ingredients, lots of fresh basil and let simmer for an hour or so.I add some crab meat at the end.It freezes really well.Very sloppy eating the crabs covered in spaghetti sauce but very tasty.

Great idea using the screen!  Just curious, how do you dispose of the guts n' stuff left on the screen?  I'd like to use my garbage disposal, I have some ideas but I'd like to hear other methods too.

(I mean assuming you're just doing it at home in the yard and not in a boat where you can just use the hose to clean it off and run it out the drain hole into a bucket or such.)

Greg...Where are you guys cleaning them?? In the back yard?? All that juice and very small pieces of guts that goes trough the screen goes where??I do the same thing in my slop sink with a screen over the drain. The only thing I do different is scrap most of the guts into a plastic bag with news paper in it.Then I freeze till trash day or take it to work and put it in the dumpster...

This was done in the street in front of the house.  By catching the guts and small pcs, I don't see why it couldn't be done in the back yard as others do.

Ron, is this a recipe?  I was thinking it was DIY (know-how).

Never ever tried cleaning the crabs first. First time I ever heard of anyone dong it was on here. Me and my family love the mustard.

They basically look like Alaskan crab bodies, only smaller. I'll give it a try next year and see how it goes. With all these people doing it, must taste pretty good.

Did you eat them shell on before and someone told you about cleaning them or have you always done this?

i've had them both ways...i started cleaning them before cooking about 5 years ago...the seasoning gets directly onto the meat and i found that my kids eat more crabs now because they don't have to clean them.

Whaler, do a search here for clean before cook or CBC.  It is really a matter of personal preference.  I used to steam live but have switched to CBC.  I like the fact that the crab meat gets the seasoning right on it and it is much, MUCH simpler to start picking with 75% less mess not to mention there is less debris from the shells and guts.

More work up front but IMO a more enjoyable meal later.

question

in clean before cook - do you steam them right side up. This seems like any condensation water would settle in the crab
steaming them upside down sounds strange but no water buildup

thinking about trying it

I like them both ways, but cleaning them first is good for the sauce and for baking.I also freeze them clean and it's only good for the sauce.I can make crab sauce all year.

mutzy, when you clean then freeze them how do prep them for freezing? zip lock bag? how long can the keep in the freezer? i've done the zip lock and freeze but only for about a week. i wasn't sure they would stay much longer because you cant get all the air out of the bag and thought they would get freezer burned.

Thanks! Interesting what you can learn from others. Just when you think you've got it figured out....
Can't wait to try it next year.

As soon as I clean we put into a good freezer wrap paper.I then check for any points that might be sticking out and cover. We tape with wide tape and put into a plastic bag and label the date.I'm good for sauce all winter..........

Most of the cleaning discussions have been put in this area...
