Purchased a 24"x24"x12" crab pot a few weeks ago and was eager to try it out last weekend. let it sit all night and got nothing the next morning.
Bait was still there, as if they couldnt get to it. entrance funnels were opened up enough, it just looked like they couldnt get in. So I got to thinking... the funnel entrances are about a 1 1/2" above the bottom of the trap.

Can they really be that dumb and not be able to climb a 1.5" lip?

I feel like they're smart ENOUGH to be able to climb that...but then again, they DO go into traps for food over and over and over again

Im catching 40 to 50 bu a day that climb that 1.5 inches.  New trap never catches real good for a few days unless crabs are thick.

True, you'd think that being pulled out of your habitat, encountering giants, getting stepped on, kicked across the dock/boat, claws stretched or getting picked up by your hind legs and flung back while spinning in the air until your shell impacts water would be enough to teach any animal to stay away... 

Not to mention the verbal abuse they go thru, like "you're too small" etc...
(Not that I abuse/torture wildlife, I tell them they "aren't ready yet")
 
Just like fish, 30 second memory cycle...

Some learn better than others...

Naw they were feeding, got these on saturday, same dock.
Wanted to leave a trap in overnight to have some for the trip home on sunday.

Thanks, thats all I got plus 3 or 4 more in the bag I already cleaned...
Got 'em with rings off the dock. Got a cold standing in the cold weather all day long too...  Grin
It was kinda slow that day... Tybee Island was by far the most productive back in Oct.

Never had that problem with new pots but ones that had [curd] all over them seemed to catch next to nothing so a waterman friend of mine told me to pressure wash them and it seemed to do the trick.Now I pressure wash them twice per year.

ive seen smaller, but for the most part thats the average size on the GA coast.

The guys here told me "not" to pressure wash. Just rotate the pots. Let them just sit in the sun for a week then switch them out for the pots that are fishing etc.  Been doing that for years now works fine but if the pots that are fishing get "really fouled", they need to be power washed.

I see what looks like a piece of rebar cable-tied to the bottom edge of your trap.  Did you do that mod?  If so, what is the advantage?

Yup... found some 1" rebar in the shop and figured I'd use that instead of 1/2" all the way around. 
Works great in keeping it still in the current.
