Greetings from a long time lurker
«

I've been a recreational crabber all my life, first as a small child on the west coast with dungeness and for the last 20 years on the TX coast with blues and stones.
From time to time I've considered buying a commercial License when they rarely come available, but since I'm gone during the peak season I quickly put that out of mind, but perhaps someday.....
I go by my own set of rules.
While the legal size is 5" here I don't keep anything less than 5 1/2", frankly any smaller isn't worth the trouble in my mind.
And while females are legal I throw them back, perhaps it's just habit from my dungeness days, but doesn't it make sense for continued propagation of the species?
I would welcome thoughts from others on "my rules" specifically on not keeping females and if some of y'all do the same.

Welcome Crabby.
You will find allot of folks on the BCA that share your way of thinking. For year, allot of us preached "throw the females back" now it's the current law for Rec's crabbing in Maryland.
I crab in VA where it's legal to take them, but do not harvest Sooks. Just my personal preference.

Thanks for the welcome, and I'm glad others feel the same way about not keeping females.
I just wish the commercial guy across the harbor agreed as well, but I understand he has to make a buck too.
Crabbywaters, I'm a sunbird so I spend June through October on the shore of Lake Huron, thus I miss the peak season here.
Right now it's mostly females in the traps, though I've just been crabbing off my dock and not in the bay yet as I've been busy with other things.
Last winter was an unusually a good year for stone crab and not as good for blue (at least for me)
Time will tell what this winter will bring.
Now I'm off to bait the traps and get some work done around this slum
