I'm all for wild caught and watermen making a dollar
but the bycatch on this show is up to 98% --- which die on the deck as they pick out the shrimp
one show they pulled up a net full of dead catch which is the "by catch" that was thrown overboard by other boats
another show - the deck is loaded with butter fish ( a good tasting fish ) which die on the deck as they pick out the shrimp and are then pushed dead back into the water
then a load of scallops - these nets are bottom draggers that take everything
looks like they catch a whole lot more fish than they do shrimp
what do you guys think - anybody watch this show

Hi:
I have watched the show since it started and in fact I am watching it as I type.
I have seen the waste you described but don't really see how one can drag & catch shrimp without snagging the other catch.
It seems that they move quickly to pick out the shrimp to get them chilled and expect that a good bit of the extra catch survives the ordeal.
I would think that if the extra catch were endangered species, that they would be shut down.
I would agree that we should minimize waste on land and sea, but don't see a way around the concern you have expressed.
Happy & SAFE!! crabbin to all.

I watch the show also. The only thing that I am sure of about the bycatch is, no matter how fast they put it back it's going to be dead. Remember they drag those nets for 2 or more hours at a time. Fish do drown. Really cool show though...

we used to use drag nets for crabs - caught hard, soft, fish, everything but we did it in minutes and bycatch was alive when it went back
2- 3 hr drag nets are like hand grenades - they take everything out
I don't know what the answer is but people I know that shrimp do it with a net and bait them into the net

I noticed this and questioned the amount of the bi-catch.

that picture was Spot but on the tv last night, it was butter fish and crabs by the way
seems like they could sell it as food or chum or fertilizer but I guess shrimp is the big money and they don't want to store the other stuff
and I understand guys fish behind the shrimp boats because the big fish follow the shrimp boats for the bycatch - a free floating chum line maker
in this sharks in a feeding frenzy video you can hear them shoveling the bycatch off the deck

I'm watching it and enjoying it so far. Glad to not see all the bickering and infighting a few other shows have(maybe that will come with the popularity).
I also questioned the by catch and wondered why it couldn't be kept and used for something else. Its more work and money but theres probabaly a profit in there somewhere. It does benefit the chum line and feed for circle of life I guess but what a waste. These people have been doing it for decades and i've only been watching for 4 hours so they PROBABLY know and understand more about it than i do.

There is another show on these days called Lobstermen. They also spotlight a fish net dragging boat. On more than one episode the captain is on the deck when the fish are being culled and he acts,(not sure if it's for tv or real) extremely upset over his bycatch. He slams the fish and game people because when he reaches his limit on any one species, if any come up with the net he has to toss them over the side, dead. These nets are much bigger and the nets come up with tons and tons of fish.

I'm surprised they show any bycatch. Usually the commercial fishing organizations seem to deny that there is any such thing.....
It is a fact of life when fishing like this takes place. Most people don't even take into consideration what else may be in the way of them getting what they want on their plate unless it's "flipper"......
