Do I need two licence
«
on:
January 04, 2012, 08:29:15 PM »
I'm getting ready to buy my license and have a question(maybe stupid). I have two boats and only use one at a time. I bought 2 crabbing stickers and put one on each boat last year. This year I would like to get the consoldated fish/crab. But for a $100 for 2 compared to $30 for 2 just to crab. I wasn't sure if there are any other(legal-
) options.

If the boat is licensed for recreational crabbing with the Recreational Crabbing Boat License or at least one person in the boat possesses an individual recreational crabbing license:
1200 feet of trotline (baited portion)
Maximum 30 crab traps or rings
Handlines
Dipnets
1 Boat Decal (including the complimentary portable license that comes with the decal) = 1 Crabbing License
1 Boat Decal = 1 Bushel of Crabs
1 Boat Decal + 1 Additional Recreational License = 2 Bushels of Crabs
1 Boat Decal + any additional number of recreational licenses still = 2 bushels

You could just buy an individual license and accomplish the same goal, 1 bu. per day for the boat. If you take a guest and feel the need for 2 bu., then have the guest get a license. I never have understood the benefit of the $15.00 boat license compared to the $5.00 individual license.

I think the first two answers may have missed the point. You want to be able to crab OR FISH from either boat. Am I understanding the question? If so, do you want to be able to fish, or do you want ANYONE on either boat to be able to fish?

1 Boat Decal (including the complimentary portable license that comes with the decal) = 1 Crabbing License - which I "assume" can go on any boat since it is portable? ( I know never "assume" with DNR. )

Yes I want to fish from the boat(anybody, whole family). I just hate to spend $100 for two boats to just throw a line in the water once in a while when crabbing is slow. Crabbing stickers are only $30 for two boats. I have bought two license in the past one crabbing and one consolidated fish/crab but I wanted to know if there is a better or cheaper way to license two boats with one owner.

If it was just
you
fishing, you could get away with a personal fishing license and two crabbing boat licenses, but if you want everyone to be able to fish, I think you're SOL. I got a consolidated license for the first time last year. Got tired of watching all the fish jumping around me. I actually never got to fish last year, but I'm sure I'll do the same this year just to keep my options open.

If I'm not mistaken, the way I am reading what you want to know is largely points to the consolidated way. Why?? Well because you are also talking about "FISHING" which then the question is, Yes, I've saved money for crabbing but what now if I want to go fishing.
So, the way I read it, only one way to go, consolidated.

But you don't just want to crab, you want to crab and fish. Gotta pay to play. Personally, I've never found the time to do both. When I crab, I crab, when I fish, I fish. Boat license is not transferable. If you want to use 2 boats, you have to license 2 boats

I found this interesting tidbit here. Upper case letters are dnr's, not mine
http://dnr.maryland.gov/service/fishing_license.asp#CBCSPFL
Consolidated Chesapeake Bay & Coastal Sport Boat License allows everyone on board a vessel used for pleasure to fish in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries and the state waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Atlantic coastal bays and tributaries in lieu of individual licenses. However, these individuals must register with the Department (see below). A special complimentary Bay & Coastal sport fishing license, which includes recreational crabbing, will be issued to the boat owner purchasing this license.
The $50 Chesapeake Bay Sport Fishing Decal is
NOT
valid as a Recreational Crabbing Boat License
(though the purchaser of this decal is given one complimentary individual recreational crabbing license).

The way that I read this is that with the consolidated license allows the boat owner and his passengers to crab, but with the limit being restricted to one bushel because of the one license. This meaning that the licensed owner can be the only one that has the authority to keep that one bushel on board the vessel. Now, if another individual has a license, then the second (and only the second) bushel can be also legally be kept.
My interpretation and 2¢ worth of thinking.......No change required!

I'm sorry if My post was a little confusing. Too many cold ones late at night
. We want to start using the boats a little earlier and a little latter in the crab season and I never really fished for striper, rock, cats in the Chesapeake (anybody wants to go out in a boat and teach me I'm willing to learn
) I have a "smaller boat" and a "bigger boat" that I take depending if its just me ( 16'Jon) or the family(18'center console). I just thought there might be a better way to license two boats with one owner. I thought about using clear tape and moving my bay sticker from boat to boat depending on the boat I'm using but that would probably be illegal

I would get a sport fishing license for the bigger boat. You get the crabbing license and just keep it on hand when you use your smaller boat when crabbing. Fishing in a Jon boat isn't exactly fun in the Bay, maybe in a creek. That way your licensed to fish and crab on the big boat and can crab on the smaller boat too for $50.00. At least I think that is your legal way around it.

Start by tagging both trailers in Maine and apply that savings to buying consoldated fish/crab lic for both boats...

PA may not allow the Maine Tagging.
BTW.... Maryland's law says the tow vehicle and at least one trailer (titled to the owner) has to be registered in Maryland.
Annotated code of Md
Transportation article 13-402
(f) A trailer or semitrailer operated in intrastate service need not be registered in this State if:
(1) It is registered in another state;
(2) The truck tractor or other vehicle that is towing it is registered in this State; and
(3) The registered owner of the truck tractor or other towing vehicle has at least one trailer or semitrailer registered in this State for each truck tractor also registered in this State.

I don't understand the question.
If it doesn't have current tags (ie current registration) , it is not able to be used on roadways.

If one has a trailer that's not being used and has expired tags... Will that trailer count as registered??

Don't know. If I had to guess, technically I'd say It's not registered if it doesn't have current tags.

Yes. The registration takes place when you apply for a title. I have had trailers (cars and motorcycles) that have sat with expired tags for years (one motorcycle sat for 20 years) and all I had to do was renew the tag. We would park a trailer that wasn't being use on our back lot and forget about it for years. At least that's how it worked years ago. Just don't cancel insurance (cars and trucks) until after tags are turned in.... Fine is $150 for first 30 days and then a additional 7 bucks "a day". Friend of mine got nailed for over 500 bucks....

as I know it
registration - state recognition of property ownership thru use of a title
license tags - state recognition of right for the vehicle to use or be on public roads thru use of metal tags
drivers license - state recognition of right for you to operate a vehicle on public roads thru use of person license
makes sense

There is a difference between trailers and motor vehicles in Maryland. Motor vehicles have to be covered by insurance as long as the tags have not been turned in to the MVA. Trailers do not and you don't have to turn trailer tags in when you sell a trailer.
A title is proof of ownership.
Registration is the tagging of a vehicle to use public roads. You do not have to apply for a registration when you title a vehicle. Of course you can't run it on public roads with out it, Unless you get tags from another state. Maine lets you title a trailer where ever and register for tags in their state.
Title and registration are not one and the same in Maryland.

We're just saying the same thing different ways. I have 8 service trucks and 6 trailers of varoius sizes right now. From single axle to haul a tank size.
Don't even remember how many we've had. Glad I don't have to deal with it anymore.

Thats funny. I have my car trailer, and my horse trailer tagged with a Maine tag and I live in Pa. Yes I am legal. But do I look for "lope holes" to save money, time, and B.S. on titling, tags and insurance you bet
