And here are some other pics from my trailcam since we were about 80 yards away, and decided to pull the memory card out.

haha...we got turkeys...they are like squirrels. One is white in the hens/jakes group. The one bearded bird a year isn't helping control the numbers. Apparently there are coyotes around, and there are fox but they haven't done much.

I don't know man I like em both but there something about the ease of field hunting geese compared to the river duck hunting that i do. Not to mention sitting quietly as floakcs of geese weighing 8 lbs or more circling above making all kinds of whistling and whooshing noises. It was awesome the first time I heard them plus the thud they make when they hit the ground.

Nice job for your first duck hunt! It is addictive. Unless you live in the area, it can be very expensive, by the time you consider all the specialized gear, travel and time required to be successful at it. I can't wait for the woody season next Oct. I had always given them away, that won't be happening again!!!

I am thinking about going again Saturday morn. I don't have a dog hunting the big tax ditch to use, but I think a fishing pole with a big treble hook (barbs cut off) and weight, with a bobber could work well. If not I can slide my ol' little 10' flat bottom in. Any ideas from fellow hunters who have gone without a retriever?

I've killed and retrieved hundreds of birds without a dog. If you can, try to shoot them where they don't fall in high vegatation like phragmites. When hunting ponds in a marsh, I used a truck innertube with a piece of plywood lashed to the bottom of it as a retrieving vessel. Not a very stable platform but it worked in a pinch and much cheaper than a dog. Try not to go by yourself as it can be unsafe and it's always more fun to laugh with somebody. Good Luck!

I like the plywood idea, the tax ditch I'll hunt is about 20-30 feet wide and with a steep bank, without a dog makes it tough. I was thinkin dead duck snaggin would work since it is easy to cast across that distance. Flounder I have friends but always got to think of plan B, no way I can have a dog myself, work is too busy for me.

Yes, in a "puddle", snagging has worked many times. When I was talking about ponds in the marsh, they were several hundred feet across, some larger. Good luck, let us know how you make out!
