Pretty! Did you have many throwbacks? The YFT here on the east coast seem to be getting smaller all the time.

Blame it on the commercials.
From the accounts of many captains I have talked to about this, it seems they have never recovered from years ago when they were so thick that the sportfishing vessels were running two trips a day, killing their 18-24 fish limit each trip. From what I understand this went on for two or three years in a row. Since then, the overall catch has been much smaller. Was it over harvesting or is it just cyclical. It's very easy for people to point fingers but no one really knows. I can remember years when everyone was complaining about the lack of crabs where they were used to catching them. The crabs were still here, just not in the same old places. There are way too many variables when dealing with animals in the wild to pin blame on one person or group of people for reduced catches etc. Not all crabbers or fisherman are as successful as others, this is usually a sign of lack of adaptability versus lack of available stock.

For this it is safe to say.....and I'm not blaming just U.S. commercials. But a fast fact Japan consumes 80% of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, and they probably consume a good bit of the others as well. That is a'lot of tuna picked out of the ocean. Especially if whole schools are caught and juveniles before they can breed. I watched a show on National Geographic where Austrailian tuna fisherman netted a whole school, and towed it to what they call an offshore pen to fatten them up for the Japanese market.

No throwbacks this trip. We had a wahoo breakoff and lost 3 others that didnt make it to the boat but judging by the way the one screamed off the 80 it might of been a bluefin or a bigger yellow. Smallest was 30 inches and the biggest we had was 40something, weights varied. Had 8 total.
And jack il save ya some next trip.

Here's a throwback from the good ol days.
I think I was about 7 years old. My father, cousin, uncle, and a few of my father's employee's and I would go 100 miles out from Lewis for over night trips. Got caught in 20 foot rollers one day. Then on another trip lost an engine about 50 miles out. We had a 39' Topaz then.
Its actually for sale by the guy who bought it from us.

That's a great picture Ray. Was that right before the fish fell over and took you with it?

Before my father got laid up, we were always fishing and he was a very good fishermen. Eventually going every weekend led me to crabbing.
