The weather said 19mph ESE. I didn't expect to make it out this morning, but I hooked up the boat last night anyway and put the bait out. Woke up this morning with a big head(boiled crawfish last night and had a beer too many). At 0500 the leaves on the trees were barely twitching so I was out the driveway at 0545. On the water at 0600. Wind was picking up fast. Eased out in a head wind of about 10-15mph. First trap on the boat at about 0630. It was about an average of a 1 1/2 crabs per trap. Not bad considering what I was expecting from Ronnie's last report. Then it actually picked up. Doing about 2-3 a trap for a stretch. Not near as many empty traps as the last two pickups. Noticed a few more buster's showing up and a mess of virgin females. By the time I hit the final run, the sea's built pretty good. The swells were rocking me good and the chop was keeping me sprayed with a nice cool spray. Totals for the day.

50lbs of #1's

20lbs of #2's

I'm going to start the tanks up for the shedder's. Seems like they are showing up enough to get 'em going.

Man those things are beautiful.  I miss them.  You guys are so hard us northern boys.  

I had me some crawfish over the weekend for the first time this year. 3lbs worth with some taters and corn and i couldv'e eaten 3 more.  Them bad boys are good.  Wish they were as easy to get up here as they are down your way.  

BTW that trolling motor looks like she's seen better days.

i keep meaning to take that motor off, but i kinda like the extra weight on the front of the boat. it barely worked when i bought the boat and i just tore it up on the docks. i lost the prop to it while fishing on a well in breton sound and that was the end to it. if i can muster the energy, i think i'm going to go take it off later today. you've inspired me.

Joey,

What time did you get off the lake?  About 930 it really picked up.  Am I glad I'm on the south shore.  East swells were bad but the south wind pushed me all over the place.  Good catch buddy.

Are those all peelers in the tank??  Its pretty unusal to see them holding onto each other like that, unless they are really green.

ron, at 0930 it was kicking, but as you know, when your pulling pots in, the waves don't even seem to be there, I was on my last 30 at about 1000 and it started to get "real". i contemplated just heading in, but i do enjoy it. i actually like it when it's rocking like that once i'm on the line. at one point i think i was totally vertical when reaching for one of my corks. if you trust your boat it's easy. i didn't see one other fisherman out today so that kinda speaks for itself. if i would have known your were out when I left, I would have cruised on over to you and rode with you. I just like being out on the water. I can say this, if I would have been an hour later getting out, I probably wouldn't have done it, but once i'm out, it's just fun.

I tell myself and everyone else that I pull by hand to keep in shape, but I think I see a pot puller in my future. I don't know if I'm more sore from tilling my garden yesterday or from pulling pots today, but I can tell you this, I do feel it.

yes, it was rough water, but the catch was keeping me going. on my last 30 or so, I was getting a good catch of number 1's so I had to finish it out.

Mr Ray III,
I think I have to clarify. Those are my crabs in the tank of the buyer. He has about 50 tanks that he keeps the crab in for his restaurant. None of those are pealers. He used to do shedder's but now he keeps his crabs and crawfish in the tanks until he is ready to cook them for the customers. Talk about getting the freshest product. His operation is quite impressive.

Yeah, but by the time you put the basket down and turn the camera on (approx 15 seconds) they let go.

I put the boat on the trailor at 1230.  It was reaqlly kicking by then.  Only had 1 other crazy crabber out there by me by the gray well.  He was in a 19' Reno with a Suzzuki(?).  Now look at this morning, nice and calm.  Go figure.  I'll be out there on Tuesday.  BTW Des Allemands is paying 2.50 for 1's and they don't have to be that big.  6" All other 2's and factory is $1.  109 lbs of crabs netted $248.  I'll start pulling the bigger males for my restaurant and the rest is going to the dock.  What are you paying for your poggies?  $18 a box.

I'm selling for 2.25 for # 1's and 1.00 for # 2's. Probably wouldn't be worth it to go to des allemands unless i was dealing with much bigger numbers. the guy i usually sell to is consistant and i consider him a friend so i don't really look for other buyers. If in the future my numbers get bigger, i might start looking for alternate places to sell, but for now, i'm happy with the way it's going. the pogies are $18 a box. I did what you do and i went out and bought a big freezer so i can buy in bulk. well, bulk enough. i can fit about 9 boxes of bait in my freezer. I might need to find out where you get your catfish because that seems to be a better bait. cheaper and last longer.

Catfish heads are up to $15 a box now.  I baited 220 traps using 2 boxes of bait, 1 per trap for now.  Heads last longer especally when the water gets warmer.  We'll see.  Baited 120 with heads and 1/2 pogie and 123 with just heads.  Lets wait and see.

Igotcrabs and capt rons report's are killing me; i wont be able to get out and set my massive string Wink of 24 pots until April, this work thing really interferes with my crabbing!

Did manage to find some time last weekend to demobe the boat from duck hunting and reconfigure for summer fun time.

I need to get the info on the catfish head supplier, i lost what capt. Ron had given me earlier. 

Keep the reports and photos coming, this year should be a banner year due to the opening of the Bonnet Carre last year.
