Have been told that the Hudson is filling with grass pretty bad. Near the shore get a lot of hang ups and loaded props. Probably good for soft crabs!

OK  So I missed Winter so I say Lets get right back to crabbing....Hudson River @ Poughkeepsie is 56 degrees with the outside temp as "Hot"   Anyone know how warm the water needs to be for them to travel up river?

I think it has to do with how far up river the salt line is instead of the temperature of the water. Also does anyone know a website where I would be able to look at salt line data?

Yes the salt line is correct....I have been checking and it appears that DEC has discontinued the monitoring stations in the area due to lack of funding....but if I understand the salt line thing....the lack of rain and percipitation throughtout the winter months....I would suspect that the salt line should be pretty far up river already....can't wait till I hear that they are running!

HEY guys. Life long crabber here. Normally get my fill when i vacation in the jersey shore, but ive recently found out via the internet and even this site) that not only can you eat the crabs in the hudson, the crabbing is apparently fantastic. How is the hudson to crab. I know this year is expected to make up for the blow out last year, w/ the early and high salt line.

Can I go out this weekend in Cornwall on Hudson and maybe catch a crab?? I'm thinking in a small but beautiful park by the name of "Donahue Memorial Park". Anyone know any information? Anything i should look for on the crabs? (i can tell a diseased crab). any info would be great. I'm going to go catch a bunch of sunnies after work today to use as bait.

Also some of you may know me on the Fishing and Flyfishing forums as "Catskill Mountain man"

cmm, out

I always hear 55 degrees water temps gets them moving. While it is still early I would think that we should see some catches mid June.  Anyone catching strippers?

Remember something about Temps, they r indeed bottom temps where the crabs are - most ppl read surface temps with their equipment.

The fall temps when they shut down may well be the surface temp - but in the spring the temps should be in reverse - meaning the cooler water should now be on the bottom and the warmer water on the top - now I might be as full of $hit as a Christmas Turkey on this - but I am willing to take my chances........................ Then why does ice float?  Huh  Why do crabs move to deeper water in the fall and stay deep in the spring?  Huh

Jack ice floats because it is less dense than water, not because it is colder.

Ice float because when water freezes it expands and become less dense - in the winter and colder months deeper water is a bit warmer because of the air temps cooling the water on the surface - in warmer months deeper water normally run cooler because the surface temps are effected more by the sun and air temps.

Why is shallow water normally warmer then deeper water - mostly because of the sun heating the bottom.

I stand my ground. Wink
