Had a tiny bit of luck on the 2 little piers off 175 right before you get into Chincoteague. Total: 8 crabs: 6 juveniles and 2 female keepers. Not enough for the steamer but enough to keep my 8 yo son/assistant interested in crabbing. Oh, and 5 large spider crabs Undecided.

Oysters looked good at low tide but I didn't know the VA regs for oystering so I didn't take any. Didn't bother taking pictures of 2 crabs, sorry.

Yeah I saw the organized oyster bars (all in nice little rows). I figured those were private. I was referring to the oysters on exposed rocks by the bridge and along the shore. They looked like sporadic colonies but there were lots of nice ones.

I looked up the oyster regs once we got back and couldn't make heads or tales of all the lawyer speak on the VA natural resources website.

Does anyone here know if they sell recreational oyster licenses for the Chincoteague area and if so how much does the license cost? Might be worth picking one up if I ever make it back down that way, especially if the crabbing is bad.   Huh

You don't need a license to take a bushel or less for household use BUT you can only take oysters from public oyster grounds or unassigned grounds that are legally open for harvest.  AND the season is Nov. 1st until Feb. 28th. On the seaside of the Eastern Shore.

I would leave any oysters you see alone cause if it was legal to take them, they wouldn't be there. Wink

Here is a link to the public oyster harvesting areas. I have harvested thousands of clams. But never took any oysters for fear of breaking the law. I will take them now when in these areas and in season.

From what we are hearing you can forget about crabbing at Assateague National Park.  Rumor is they are not going to allow crabbers there anymore.  Clammer to are not going to be allowed too.   Angry

Wow, really?    They have docks set up specifically for crabbing and wayfinding signs for both clamming and crabbing.    That sucks...

I just can't get over it.   My wife and I drive down from the DE house three or four times a year for day trips and always leave with a smile watching the families crab off the crabbing docks and the kayakers out clamming.
