You didnt need much space, as 300ft and an hour was all you needed to fill a basket at that time.

Now that I have a bigger boat, I could do buckets. I used to carry a few with lids in the back of my truck just in case the inflatables got a hole. I use those small grapnel anchors and they hold better with chain. Even with the added chain, they take up very little space.

Talking about simple, I have one bucket with everything in it, everything, including inflatable floats and the trotline.
