3/21 Great Bay

After 4 hours of hunting stripers without a bump yesterday, I decided to run back to the dock and grab my brand new stackable traps (Captain Moose's). Wasn't expecting to catch anything with 10 traps in NJ in March, but Dad and I wanted to work out any kinks before using the traps in MD. Got 16 keepers in about 2 hours. On March 21st in NJ, go figure!
Trap review: The traps stack and unstack very easily, bait and unbait easy, doors do not hang up, and the weight distribution is great. They actually right themselves with a substantial toss. Thanks to Capt Moose for the traps.
Glad we went to work out the kinks, though. I've never used traps before, and we initially dropped them too close together. We were on top of #2 before #1 was over the boat. I also threw the bottom trap (the one with the bungee wrap) a half dozen times before I realized the bungee was still on. Doh!
Good day on the water with Dad, and now there's crab pickings on my keyboard.

WTG Crewstation. That's a great catch for March. I was expecting reports further south of Great Bay but with the weather the way it's been, they are probably starting to move in a lot of places
Great catch

Thanks for the report Crewstation. For the last five years Great Bay and surrounding creeks and rivers have been my crabbing, fishing & clamming area (only in approved water). Great to see that kind of catch this early in the season. I can't wait till I get my boat in the water (April 15th or later). Always a good day with Dad along. Mom is my first mate!

We actually brought clamming rakes to give it a try at low tide, but I forgot the map of approved areas. Didn't want to risk it.

Get healthy, and pick a day! We sat in one spot for an hour on Wednesday, and the perch were jumping all around us, every 3 seconds for about an hour. No grass shrimp on the boat, though, and they weren't interested in tiny pieces of bloods.

I bought a dozen traps from Capt Moose over the winter. I haven't used them yet, but looking forward to trying them out soon.
