BANG!    ...and they're off!

Hit the water in the McKee Craft with my friend Scott today as one boat of a two boat armada, along with MagnumTRex and BDC who were in TRex's Carolina Skiff at 6:30 am this morning.    The McKee Craft was outfitted with 30 traps baited with necks, while the Carolina Skiff had 22 traps baited with necks.

Visibility:    30-50 feet in pea soup fog.   Water Temps:   58-59 degrees.

Ran one of my usual early season stretches and it was clear from the first pull it was on.   Three and four crabs per trap were not uncommon.   Strong tides, mists, dense fog and a kicked up wind made it tough out there, but both boats managed to make four runs through their traps and come off the water with a lid bending bushels, albeit mixed bushels of jimmies and sooks.    Keeper to throwback ratio was 2:1 +/-/    It was wet, nasty and raw out there today but well worth kicking off the season early.    Thought we lost a trap from my boat, but turned out my first mate couldn't add.    No traps were lost.

We headed back to the house, steamed up a bushel or so and had the first crab chow down of our season.

It was an unreal day.   One I won't forget because of all of the fog and how early things kicked off this year.

Way to go there Ron.  Great catch but I thought I read that you said it was rough. Undecided  I wish and hope for days when the water looks like that. laugh  What's this Blue Jeans and sweaters stuff?  We put those clothes away months ago. laugh  I bet y'all stood close to the burner to stay warm. Grin

When will be the next run?  I'll be waiting for your post.

It was rough.   The pictures don't do the fog or the chop justice.    We were all drenched when we came in.

That's a J-Crew sweater Scott (BDC) was wearing.   He was quick to let us all know that.    Grin

WTG Men  thumbsup

WOW,  Shocked Shocked Shocked, you guys look cold.  It was 65 and sunny all morning up here.  I was sweating out there today.

As always, thanks for the heads up you were going out.  Next time I will be sure not to put in for OT a month in advance when i know you may want to head out.  I know, I know, my priorities are all out of wack.  laugh laugh laugh laugh

BDC looks like he should be skiing or holding up in a tree somewhere.  Would have been better if he had a sleevless J-Crew sweater for the first trip.

Guess we can scrap that count down for the May 5th first trip of the season, although it still may be mine unless I pull something off before then.   Wink
