I've invested in a roll of string from k-mart for 2 bucks. I have a 5 dollar bucket from home depot. I have a 12 dollar net. I also have a basket for those good days, 5 bucks. Total investment 24 dollars and i have packed a basket many times. Just trying to show you don't need tons of money to go crabbing. O, and chicken necks for 3 bucks. If you ask me, there's nothing better then pulling up a big crab by hand. Just you and the beast eye to eye.

30 traps rigged @ 15 per trap=$450.00 before we're even talking about gas, bait, baskets, gloves, tongs, outside cooker, big pot, etc.    Let's not forget a boat...

How can it not become personal when you tell someone to invest thousands in a boat, money in gear, a pile of gold for gasoline, and you can catch 2 dozen crabs.

Someone from the state or elsewheres "told you" to invest thousands in a boat, money in gear and to put a pile of gold out for gasoline and if you did this you would be allowed to catch a bushel or two of crabs?  How many times has it been said on this site alone, if you can't make it as a waterman, then you need to find another profession?  It about time there is accountability on all sides and not just the comm side.

I am not getting in this com/rec thing.  My 3 bushels in a summer will never compare to the umpteen  bushel a day 6 days a week big boys.  I don't call a carpenter to drive a nail for me.  I don't call a plumber to fix a simple leak.  I don't call an electrician to plug in my tv.   I don't call a chef to make me dinner, and I am not calling you to get me crabs.

My point is you chose to buy the boat and associated gear to catch your crabs.  You made the decision to do this just like the commercial men and women chose to pick their profession.  There comes a time to evaluate the current situation and sometimes changes have to be made.  For the most part, it ends up that change comes from the commercial side.  True that recs are not allowed to keep females but at the same time, how many recs on this site alone claimed they didn't keep females and had no issues with the ban and that it would affect them at all.  Now the complaints are coming why recs can't keep females.  Again, accountability and rec reporting to truly see what the ratio is for all who are catching crabs and then make appropriate regulations based on TRUE catches from ALL involved.  This is not a rec/comm thing as you refer to it but instead a true recording of the species to do the best for the species.

I've cought  many a bushel from handlines. That's just to many crabs most of the time. Most of the time its just me and my girlfriend or a buddy, a couple dozen is all we want. My dad has a boat and the expensive gear and all we keep is at most a half bushel. When its just two people eating crabs why would we need 2 bushels.

Chris, i said not so much on the males but 2010 was my best year in 10 for me crabbing comm. I do think there is more pressure on the males but not from the comm. side as much as a collective effort just because that is what is most desired by both comm. aand rec. what i'm sayin is i don't think the sook retrictions cause more pressure on the jimmys. I also think that the changes that DNR has allowed on the sooks, that is letting more be taken is not a problem, thers way more that there was 3 years ago.

Been at least 4 years now!

I would like to see frozen LCC's placed back to "active " status before opening up female harvests to recs. again.

I believe there was a bill in the legislature directed at addressing this. I am unsure its outcome at this time.

Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley   The dnr does this for a reason!
while you are entitled to an opinion, it is clear through this post and others that you do not know enough about this subject and other behind the scenes ideas to just spat out
Whatever sounds good to you without knowing first hand how a comm boat and the dnr work.

Question, so don't yell at me...

How much of the freezing of the lcc's was due to people not reporting any crab catch?  Either because they were not being used, or being used illegally as a way to catch more for a rec, or catching crabs and selling them for cash and not reporting it?  The state really came down hard and quick.

What was the true reason for making some lcc's inactive?
