Well I crab the wye so most of the time it seems like the 95k rec. crabbers are just crabbing there.  As far as recs. selling crabs on facebook, that is a crime!  And if they continue to advertise what they are doing they will get caught.  The DNR has access to facebook.

The problem is, DNR cannot make an arrest off of 2nd hand info - they have to observe the actual act to write a ticket and prosecute. They don't consider most of these offenses big enough to invest the time and resources to pursue. I live on the water and know for a fact that there are plenty of recs crabbing several days a week that I have observed. In fact, some of them post on here. What they are doing with the crabs, I don't know.

I wonder if they could write a ticket if the reporting party/person filled out an affidavit and/or supplied them with some other evidence - i.e. pics/video?

I thought I was the worst rec crabber and this confirms it,I have never got a bushel of crabs in DE or Md,maybe they should get me to tell people where to crab, that would replenish the crabs quickly

We see this argument all the time about "how many can they possibly take"?  1 or 1.5 bushels.  Doesn't seem like much until you realize that 95,000 recreational licenses were issued last year.  And thats 95,000 people that don't have to report anything regarding how many crabs they caught.  So that little "spit into the ocean" mentality is what makes people upset, since the state has NO IDEA how many crabs are being harvested recreationally.

For fun, let's just say "most rec crabbers" as you reference above take the referenced 1 bushel/week just over june, july, august, and sept. 16 weeks x 1 bu/week = 16 bu for the season x avg 75 crabs/bushel = 1200 crabs for the season.  Now lets say that only half of the 95,000 licenses are active.  47,500 licenses x 1200 crabs/license = 57,000,000 crabs.  Add a factor of safety of 3: 19 million crabs.  Even a factor of safety of 10, still gives you 6 million crabs. So even by taking very conservative estimates on quantities, you can see that it adds up to a lot more than most people realize.

your ABSOLUTELY correct, and it all adds up!  thumbsup

Think about it, if you fill out an affidavit it's your word against the accused - where's your proof? A video or pic? What are you using for proof, the time/date stamp? Just hit your menu and change it to what you want, or worse yet, doctor the tape/pics. That's why, at the most, if you inform the DNR they MIGHT warn the perp. If it's a big enough case, they will spend time to build their own evidence. Mostly, the punishment isn't worth their time to prosecute. They get more out of writing a ticket on the water for minor infractions.

No offense but I think your way of calculating is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off.I very seriously doubt any rec gets out once a week.I also SERIOUSLY doubt any are consistently getting a bushel to a bushel and a half.In my estimates if half of the licenses are out of staters, you're talking a LOT of gas, bait etc.Speaking for myself,I crab in Md.but I also crab in De.,I'm sure I'm not alone.Anyone with kids is tied up with little league, soccer etc.

no offense, but even a very conservative estimate is an awful lot of crabs! imo, recs go out with a bushel as there "target". if they get it, they see if they can get 2. if its slow, they try hard to get 1. i know 10 people are probably going to chime in and say "i only need a couple dozen" but i'm sure the majority need more and thats what they do. they take more! we will never know what recs take until its monitored, reported, and policed! jmo!  You're right Coggi, everyone from Md that don't want us out of staters there is right,we're all crab hogging, cheap no good louses that are pillaging your fine state ,your precious bay, while not spending a dime.I APOLOGIZE TO YOU AND EVERY OTHER MARYLANDER THAT I'VE OFFENDED.I am ashamed of myself, and everyone else who have committed these grievous offenses.I hope there's some way I can make it up to all of you. This will most certainly be the last thing I post here, you have all beaten me into the ground with your superior intellect.I'm just gonna ask the state to change the welcome signs as you enter md to welcome to md,you re not welcome to crab.

You obviously don't spend much time in MD, or if you do, you have your eyes closed.

You seriously don't any rec gets out once a week?  Have you read this forum in the summer time?Huh

My numbers may be way off, and thats part of the point I'm trying to make.  Nobody knows.  But we do know how many licenses are issued.  And we have a few thousand miles of shoreline with people crabbing across a large percentage of it.

If your wild [arse] guesstimate is beter than my wild [arse] guestsimate, feel free to post it.

Seaweed,i didn't say NO recs were getting out every week,I said I doubt ALL recs are getting out every week, you have to admit thats a stretch. So I didn't make a wild arse estimate,I simply stated I doubt all recs get out every week. Also they've eliminated wednesdays,I would hope if more needs to get done they'll take additional steps.I have faith in the state of md to preserve their very valuable resource.

hopefully sooner then later.. Just come catch crabs and follow the laws and stop worrying about where you are from. The bay is in the united states. Its free for everyone to enjoy. Im from Maryland and couldn't care less some dude from pa is crabbing near me. As far as comm crabbing goes, he's trying to make a living Im just having fun. I always let them have the right of way.

I, too, also never said ALL recs get out every week.  I think we can safely say that does not happen.  I also divided my total estimate of active crabbers by 2.  And then I dividied my total # of crabs by 10, so I really divided the maximum total by 20!!  And it's still millions of crabs.  Thats the only point I'm trying to make, is that it's not an insignificant catch amount.  IMO, of course.

And you should come down on a Wednesday to see how well the "handlines only" rule is working.  Roll Eyes  And if you like that, you should launch at 3 am and head to your spot to find 3 other folks already crabbing in it.

Well I think we all agree on some things, like the fact that there are violators, and thats totally wrong.I just looked at the winter dredging report ,read how they do it,and to me the numbers seemed fine, there was a period that the numbers were down, but for now to me all seems well.my question is: Is there no faith in these estimates ,or is this a veiled excuse to keep out of staters out ?

ok in a perfect time we know how many crabs are caught by whom, then what? there are are plenty of ways to get closer to the numbers, catch shares for comms and bushel tags for recs would dial it in.
im not for either ,. btw capt ron u can go between jurisdictions with a reciprocal license and as unlicensed with more restrictions but can still harvest as a rec
