Talked to a comercial crabber That crabs in Delaware bay and he said wed thurs fri and sat had over 40 bushels each day today only caught 17 states crabs arent skinny like they usually are when they first come out of the mud.Hopeing for a good year.
The potters on the NJ side of the Delaware Bay are anxiously awaiting being able to begin hitting the bay when it opens for crab pots next week. I'll be glad when it does, because that means a bunch of them will be pulling their gear from further north.

Yes.
Several guys who would typically pot off of Salem County are up here in the Great Egg Harbor Bay now because the crabs were running and the Delaware Bay (NJ waters) wasn't yet open for crab pots.

I would think there would be "territory" issues with local comms. Who knew?

That's why I put "territory" in quotes. But I guess over the years that kind of thing works itself out. I was just picturing a new reality show - Bay Wars.

I was afraid when I first met you because your reputation preceeded you. Luckily, I found time to hide all of my dip nets to keep them out of danger.

Hit gull point today from 7:30 - 11:30am. Brought home 3/4 bushel of nice males. Plenty of sooks, but they went back. Once the wind pick up, the crabs quit completely. I was suprised how full they all seem to be. 4' to 10' trotline w/necks. Water temp 53

Since working in watershed assessment for the state I get the luxury to talk to everyone who is connected to water lol.. Talking to fish and wildlife they say this year could be an epic one crabbing, but could lead to down times for the next couple because the lack of larger older crabs succumbing to the cold waters we get normally get in the winter. In captive populations, 75 to 97% of juveniles die due to cannibalism. I know in the wild the numbers are likely not as high, but b/w the juveniles getting eaten by their own kind/stripers/croakers ......there could be a significant reduction in crabs next year. That is my two cents and I hope it isn't true.
