A couple years ago I got into some nice Bass in the back bay on poppers. I rarely keep a Bass, but did this day, he was a fat 38". While cleaning him I checked his belly contents. Much to my surprise there were 2 nice sized, and very fresh, Blueclaws in there. Here's the kicker..........the top shell was missing on both crabs Any ideas out there

As an old man told me one time(actually several times, but he thought it was the first every time) all fishermen are liars except you and me and I'm not too sure about you!!! The topshells could have been ripped of bythe fish while it was feeding. Also they can become very disfigured in the presence of stomach acids as they carry a lot of fat which breaks down faster than shell. My other theory would be there is no such thing as a blueclaws so maybe it was eating large water spiders!

Bass actually have teeth far back in their mouth, they intitially suck something into their mouth then those teeth in the back go to work, the can actually scale a fish before it goes into the stomach. Pay attention next time you catch a bass, look in the far rear portion of the mouth and you may be able to see the front prtion of the teeth I'm talking about, and don't be surprised if you see some scales back there too.

The only logical answer would be that the crab removed the top shell, but how? I highly doubt a Bass could do that once it was in his mouth with the shell points.

I have watched bass suck a minnow in, blow it out with the scales floating all around and suck it back in the final time to swallow.
