I have a small 1/4 acre pond that is over run with bluegill and is in desperate need of some thinning out instead of just waisting this little fish I was thinking about cutting them in half and putting them in clam bags on my trot line for this weekend. So I have a few ?'s, 1. Has anyone ever used bluegill for bait and if so how did it work? 2. Even with it being this early in the season how well do you think the bait would hold up, do you think I could get a few hours out of it. I have never tried fish always stuck with traditional crab baits for trot lines chicken, clams, bull lip, and eel.

I've used bluegills.  They work as good as any other fish. Bluegills are not unknown to crab.  They inhabit many brackish creeks. I have caught bluegills out in the Sound in my pots.  Don't know about trotlines, never used one.

I used to do the same thing as a kid in new jersey. The bluegills seriously outcrabbed bunker and chicken.  I would rather eat the bluegills but it you have to thin them out definetly use them. They will work.

you can use a cone type minnow trap to catch and transport the little ones to some where else

I catch all kinds of critters ( rock perch bluegill ) including a snake that went after the fish and got stuck

 laugh laugh

I even put a small bluegill in my aquarium

I will definitely give them a try in some traps, if I decide to try them on the line I'll let you know how it goes.

I use bluegills in my traps some times. I usually tie it in hole and slice the belly open to expose some guts. I think they work just as well as chicken until the guts are all eaten out after that they work about half as good as chicken.

I use them all the time and they work just fine!
In fact I usually double up with chicken and bluegills in the same trap because somedays I have found crabs like one better than the other!
And as a kicker they are fun to catch on ultralight tackle!
